Help brickwall Wm Cameron +Annie McGregor 'black sheep'

Child: Percival Joseph Cameron (my great grandfather) b: 29 Oct 1870 Inverness, Scotland.  Marriage gave mother as  Mary Lablanche  Social Security app gave mother as Annie McGregor.  He named first child Annie. Told sons 'we not really Camerons' and 'I'm blacksheep of family'. Came to US abt 1891 from New York 1887; claimed to be in Queen's Own 79th regit of foot.  Married 1891 N. Adams, Massachusetts. Have tried all records I can think of and no idea where to search next!
