Are you going to FTDNA's 13th Annual Genetic Genealogy Conference in Houston?

If you are let's get together!

So far we have a small contingent of DNA Project Members who are going and we thought we would follow Peter's lead in wearing our WikiTree Pride! ORANGE on the first day. OR WikiTree T-Shirt on the first day.

Peter? What do you consider the first day? Friday registration and evening gathering? Saturday?

We would love to be "there" together in WikiTree Orange. But how will I spot you in the crowd if you are not in Orange? Name Tags? Draw a WikiTree on your name tag?  I'll bring some WikiTree DNA project globe Stickers to put on your name tag.

Do we have anymore of the Descendant Ribbons for our tags? What about WikiTree Ribbons?

Oh I love Conferences and representing too!

Going - give me a shout and I'll get you hooked up with some bling for the conference!

FYI: Göran the Swedish developer of the FTDNA Triangulation tool that is temporary stopped is there.... he is there together with Peter Sjölund speaking saturday 9:15 AM about The Power of Mitochondrial DNA

Göran in the cage.... Houston Houston we have a problem....

Goran and Magnus win the Internet for the day.  :-)

Göran is my new best friend! I spent a lot of time with him over the weekend - along with Peter and a few other people you know. Some of us took a selfie just for you Magnus.

You tell me ;-) Its on its way to the National museum in Stockholm

I have never met Göran live and right now I think he is working in UK but his programming skills are more than impressing. Feels his solutions are excellent but he is also doing good design that is flexible and easy to maintain...... if I should start a software company and select one person it should be him....

Right now he has set up a solution for handling +400 000 pictures of ordinary Swedish people called Porträttgalleriet and I try to convince him that we should connect it with Wikidata....

One small thought I have had is a DNA solution as Aleš has done a solution for all the logical/linking errors in WIkiTree. The DNA solution should be something in between GEDMATCH and WIkiTree supporting triangulations better.......

Mag I sent some messages to Göran 3 weeks ago and he was into Graph databases (same technology used at WikiData) plus he was a little bit interested in WikiTree. Aleš suggested that he should ask for a WikiTree dump.

Did you chat about Graph database with him or making WikiTree better on DNA? See post in G2G

I didn't have a chance to get into things as we both were pulled into meetings. No worries I can give him a demo if he like.

Mags

I think he understand the Wikitree model its rather simple...

  • Supported in WIkiTree
    • Tests
      • In WIkiTree you can add DNA tests
      • Show on profiles if we can guess that a profile can use a DNA test to verify a person
      • manually select a checkbox that a person is proved by triangulation....
      • Get support what test we recommend to take to prove relationship....
  • Not supported
    • Tracing people identified as related in other DNA tools
      • Wikitree lack support for communicating that person X is "DNA" related to person Y but we dont know how
        • And display that on maps etc... or sources they share
    • Gather people who has taking tests per location
      • One interesting approach would be if we know from the church records that we can group more peoples to a location and time period. It would be nice to see a "big" Gedmatch compare matrix how much each person share segments with each other....

The interesting thing is to make DNA genealogy research better. As I write in G2G post Background Why more tools are needed Aleš has proven that bots makes us understand more things in WikiTree that WikiTree already knows.

  • Example Wikitree knows about mothers born after a child but didnt tell us ;-)
  • We also have more things that WikiTree knows but as we dont add things in a structured way it will be difficult to use it. A source for a birth record  normally is also a source for the parents that they have a child.... but that is difficult to reuse without structure...

As a big part of DNA Genealogy can be done without human intervention combining it with the knowledge in Wikitree I guess also will give us the same benefits and hopefully it's not a Pandoras box...;-)

To make it more efficient WikiTree should be redesigned to support more structured data but that is another challenge...

I had intended to be there; paid for the registration and everything.  :-(

Depending on the outcome of the game at Dodger Stadium tonight, wearing orange may not be enough. If the Houston Astros win the Series, the city may still be wearing Astros' Orange well into the middle of November.

One trick I've used before at very large conferences is to post an image file online--suitable for printing and trimming--of something that could be taped to the bottom of a name tag until a more permanent identifier (like a proper WikiTree sticker) is available at the conference. Makes for a simple, temporary ID that folks can use as soon as they get their badges at registration.

And if the Astros win, have your cameras ready from the time you arrive at the airport. There could be seas of orange that make it look like WikiTreers have taken over Houston.  :-)

Yup. It's too late to order WikiTree Ribbons - But I can get a ribbon sticker put together!

Thanks,

Mags
My exact thoughts as I'm a Houstonian and laughed when I saw the wearing Orange as the city is wearing Orange!

I volunteer to check and verify all sources and info regarding the pie, especially the taste!

I'll be there and try to be in orange, not that I'll stick out in Houston that way! A group of us who all have ancestors from colonial Maryland and Virginia are getting together at the Friday evening gathering.
by Phil Kuhn G2G2 (3.0k points)
Great Phil! If you PM me your size and addy I can try to get a T-Shirt sent to you.

Mags
Hi Phil!  The immigrant ancestor of the Y-DNA project at FTDNA for which I am the co-administrator, George Athy (my 8th great-grandfather and my father's namesake), immigrated to Maryland from Ireland circa 1662.  Some of his descendants moved to Virginia.  I'd love to get together with your colonial MD/VA group tomorrow evening.  How shall I try to locate you?

Darlene - Co-Leader, British Isles Royals & Aristocrats 742-1499 Project
I just uploaded a selfie I just took. I probably will be wearing an orange polo-style shirt. Just come to tomorrow evening's get together. I'm 6' tall and two of the group are taller by several inches. We'd love to meet you, Darlene.
You uploaded this selfie to where?!
Mags, click his name and you'll see the selfie.  Phil, I will be on the lookout for your group of tall people!  Looking forward to it!
As Darlene said, Mags. It's not the profile picture, but the one down below. Both me, but I've had chin whiskers for a year or so.
Gotcha. I amused to tall people  three tall sons in my life. Two taller than you. :-) Now how to spot a tall WikiTreer? he he Mags
Are you sure we aren't cousins? That sense of humor seems very familiar!

Hi Mags,

I'll be there as co-administrator of the Athey-Whitfield Y-DNA project.  I met you for about one second at RootsTech in February.  Would love to spend more time with you and other Wikitreers.  I have been on the road for the past three weeks, so didn't pack anything orange . . .

I'll be on the lookout for you!

No worries! I have a Wikitree Psuedo ribbon, WikiTree Tribbles and WikiTree Dot's for you to embellish your Credentials with! See you Friday night!

Two seconds at Roots Tech...the impression you left me with was an hours long dinner and chat! What it wasn't? :-)

Mags
FOFL!  I wonder who that was impersonating me?  I hope she was an entertaining as I can be?!  ;)
