Where to search for death source? Probably Connecticut 1798-1832

Looking for suggestions as to where to search for a death source for Timothy Scranton. My thoughts are to look through the sources on the Connecticut sources pages and/or track down his 10 children to see where they were living and if that yields any clues.

I just find it hard to believe that if he really did live to be 110 that there wouldn’t have been something published about that. Obviously the gazillion online trees, the FSFT, and FindAGrave have no problem with it.

Thanks for advice.

FYI... I have searched FamilySearch, Ancestry, Google, and Erastus Scranton published genealogy.

Here is one reference, doesn't give a DOD, but maybe some clues, including a list of children.

There are several genealogies and histories referenced, use Roots Search and then the Google Search option.

Lots to look through, I hope something helps.

One last link, then I am gonna hit the hay.  That link for the church, was Vol. 063 for Madison.  There is Vol. 62 also.  I looked in there, everyone is alphabetically arranged by surname.  Timothy is not in that one, but a lot of Scrantons are, might help you with other Scrantons later.  On the page that is copied it will say page 211.  On the bottom, where you can put in the page, Scrantons begin on page 213.  (Which is 211 of the copied pages.) Here is the link: http://ancstry.me/2kVzpbl

There are loads of Scrantons.

I've added this to his profile, but the death date will need to be changed still.

Thanks for providing that solid information, Anne.

If Timothy Scranton was buried in 1832, it was a different man (possibly this man's son or a nephew).
Thank you!!

I really appreciate it. I will update his FSFT entry, contact his FindAGrave manager and put it into a public Ancestry tree to propagate.

This also tells us that son Emery per Scranton genealogy was wrong, it was Emmon. And several sons died prior to 1835.
It is a small world, I'm working on another problem, that just led me to Timothy Scranton's second wife. She's now sourced and bioed. Imagine my surprise.

I found this on Ancestry.  It is a list of deaths from newspapers in the area at the time.  In the very top left hand corner is where the year of death is located.  He is at the very, bottom of the list, in fact, he is the last person listed. It shows he died at the age of 87 on 12 Feb.,1848. I hope this is helpful.  (Dang, had to use bitly to shorten the link!  It was long)

Forget that one.  1848.   My brain was thinking 1748.  Bleh.  My apologies.I will keep looking.
Great find. Age and death date match his son Timothy. We can use that when we create his profile.

Shoot, Kay.  I just found a reference to him in North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000.  It actually says he died at the age of 112,  In 1834.  No other dates given, or place for his death.  Also lists three wives and has them named and and the dates of their marriages.  I am sending you two links this time.  They are from a book.  If you are familiar with Ancestry, when you first click on a link you want to view, it gives you a summary of sorts. The summary is that which lists his wives, etc....when you click on the actual link to the book, he is towards the top of the page, with his birth date.  I suspect you might have to look through the book, or see if you can find it on Google Books, because the page that comes up doesn't show the info on the summary.

Here is the summary link: http://ancstry.me/2wYeo1e

Here is the actual page that comes up link:  http://ancstry.me/2yqHlWN

P.S.  Abigail is one of the wives listed.

I absolutely hate it when sites like Ancestry and FamilySearch don’t specify the source where they got information. I’m pretty sure that’s the Erastus Scranton genealogy see (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:A_genealogical_register_of_the_descendants_of_John_Scranton_of_Guilford%2C_Conn.%2C_who_died_in_the_year_1671

After looking at quite a bit of that, his style was to list the wife’s death.

Yes, I use Ancestry a lot, since they often have church record images I can’t get on fami.

Ok, found this, marriage to Comfort Richmond a widow, 15 Nov., 1797.

Link for marriage to Comfort Richmond, Early Connecticut Marriages: http://ancstry.me/2ifIPNz

Here is the one for widow, Anna Field, in 1779.  Also Early Connecticut Marriages: http://ancstry.me/2yMuvU1

Sheesh, even in 1797 he would have been 75.  He obviously did not like being alone.

I do think it is from the same book you have a link to in your reply.

I dunno if these two marriage records help, but if it is him, and not some other Timothy, it may help with timing.  :)

I wish he had a middle name.

Here is another link, mentions both wives.  It is a Connecticut Church Record.  There are some abbreviations used in reference to Timothy that I do not understand.  (If you do, please tell me, probably useful.)

Here is the link: Connecticut Church Record Abstracts, http://ancstry.me/2yqDRn6

The source at the bottom of the record is:

"Source InformationAncestry.com. Connecticut, Church Record Abstracts, 1630-1920 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: 2013.  Original data: Connecticut. Church Records Index. Connecticut State Library, Hartford, Connecticut."

This record is a church record from Guilford.  It lists his birth to his parents, his marriage to Abigail and the birth death of some of his children. It is from:  Connecticut Town Birth Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection) for Timothy Scranton, Guildford Vital Records.

Love the abbreviations. Some, but not all, are listed on strip image #2

I have no idea what o.c. is, but would guess maybe something about joining the church?
I should have thought to look on there for the abbreviations.  Getting tired I guess.  Been at this since about 7am.  :)  O.C.  Could be joining the church.  Have you had any luck?
Did you happen to look at the prior page in those church records I posted a link for?  More Scranton info in there, baptisms, who his children married, etc...

Still, nothing about his death.  With all the info those church records hold I cannot imagine why the date of his death would not be.  :(

This may not help, but it may give you more info to work with: Revolutionary War, Connecticut Line:

Timothy Scranton (of Guilford): enlisted April 10 1777, for duration of war

Tory Scranton (of Guilford): enlisted April 12 1777, for duration of war. Tory was the son of your Timothy, born April 6, 1756.

Other party could have been: your Timothy, or son Timothy, born April 1, 1761

by Jim Parish G2G6 Pilot (176k points)
Yeah, Torrey is my ancestor. I haven’t created a profile for him yet. The Erastus Scranton book said two of his sons fought, from memory Torrey and Timothy.

Guess I’m taking the route of researching his children...

This is a great question.

1.  A quick search for Timothy brought up Find-A-Grave.  If there is a photo of the tombstone, this MAY help.

"Find A Grave Index," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2BY-NDTD : 10 March 2017), Timothy Scranton, 1832; Burial, North Madison, New Haven, Connecticut, United States of America, North Madison West Side Cemetery; citing record ID 174116301, Find a Grave, http://www.findagrave.com.

2.  To keep things straight, I helped source his son who is also named Timothy Scranton.  Private Timothy Scranton, 1761-1848, is a patriot honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. (Heck, I thought HIS death date would help clarify this -- but not!!)

If any of this helps - great.  Otherwise -- how long DID he live?  This may take more pondering!

I requested a photo!  I hope there is one! :)
