My Great Grand mother was adopted

My Great Grand Mother ,  Ellen Lee ( Duck ) Powell, Birth 23 Sept 1877 in Polk , North Carolina.  Husband James Lee Powell......Rumor Has She was adopted and there is no known record I can find of her parents..Also my beliefs are They were in Cherokee County or might have been Cherokee,either way I can not find any records. Thank you For any Help...wcm
