PEI, Canada Costains and Isle of Man

Question

Prince Edward Island Costains of Canada. Looking for more on William D. Costain and his wife Ellen and his brother Paul. Also at what point does his family trace back to the Isle of Man.

Tried to find early Costain born in the Isle of Man who relocated to PEI, but without success. Hope someone else at WikiTree can provide an answer.

Have you tried searching with ancestry.com ? I only mentioned it because I was able to trace my Manx ancestry back to the 1700s using parish records essentially that I accessed through ancestry. Costain is definitely a Manx family name (there is a book available to view for free online written around 1900 that is a study of Manx surnames). I've been able to trace my ancestry back this way much further than any ancestor on my paternal line, by at least 100 years. Like yourself, my Manx ancestor immigrated to Canada (around the time of confederation), and lived in Ontario and Chicago. If you haven't tried already it gave me results so best of luck.

A question that has confused me is what is our family crest?  I see several with costain attached.  I have been able to trace my family from Prince Edward Island Canada to the Isle of Man (1600s) but I see an English crest with a shield depicting wolf heads, as well as a Scottish one with a shield depicting a lion and green cross, as well as  a crest with a shield with a red peak with 3..blue..not sure what they look like..moustaches haha? It says  crux nostra corona ..I even found one entitled o’costain

I am perplexed as my DNA has me split 42% Scottish and 42% England and northwestern Europe.

Hi Jayson, it seems to me that your surname name reflects the direct male line, so only a very small % of the DNA, which shows the full range of your male and female ancestors.  For the Isle of Man, I would expect a mix of Viking and Celtic, which your DNA profile seems to reflect.

I would expect a crest to be related to a specific male ancestor or group of ancestors. I'm not sure I would expect to find "one" crest for the surname, as there could well have been many crests for different Costain families across places and generations. On the other hand, not all families had crests. To find one that may have been used by your ancestor(s), I would look at your ancestors on the Isle of Man.
