Idea: Find-A-Grave template

Here's my idea: a leader would create a template that will link a WT profile to a Find-A-Grave memorial.

(i.e. "John Doe has a Find-A-Grave memorial [with link embedded]")

That way, we'll easily be able to view someone's Find-A-Grave memorial listing, and be able to compare sources, etc.

Just an idea.

Please let me know if this can be done. Thanks!

Zachary, most Findagrave memorials are unsourced since that is not the (current) goal of that site.

Are you envisioning a template that displays an image, like the Project Boxes or Research Note Boxes?

As Kerry states, we already have a basic source template for Findagrave, but we have not yet decided whether to adopt them (Source Templates) for  standard use.

I am envisioning something along the lines of a project box. I don't know if this idea is something feasible or in demand, though.
Sounds like an interesting idea, but you would probably need to create a project or sub-project to develop usage standards and to maintain a degree of order.

I see no particular feasibility problem compared to other projects. As you say, it's more about interest - and commitment, as well as focus.

I don't find a Findagrave template. Can you enlighten me please?

It already exists:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:FindAGrave

However, "source templates for formatting" are Not Recommend (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Source_Templates), and I'm not sure if that includes this one.  Nothing was said about it in the G2G discussion last fall (https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/300963/findagrave-template-use).

I am very much aware of the fact that FAG memorial biographies aren't source records. Thanks for including the template link.
The Find-a-Grave template is considered more of an "external link" template instead of a source template, and a decision hasn't yet been made about whether or not these will be approved. It's still listed in the Source Templates category for now until a decision is made about how to move forward with the categorization and standardization of templates.

In other words, the jury is still out. :-)

Why make everything so complex

If something will change use templates to isolate the changing part to the template

  1. Not using templates for external links is asking for problems
  2. In Sweden it looks like churchbooks will be free to access next year. Lesson learned if we had used templates for sources maybe we could have just changed the template to get a link to the new free source

One major problem with Wikitree is that its based on an old version of the Wikimedia software that lacks good functions for writing advanced templates.....

Hi Julie,

One of our members was asking if perhaps we could create a Dutch version of the Findagrave template, we have a website that works similar Online Begraafplaatsen  But before creating one I figured I'd better ask, so do you know if something was or is going to be decided soon about templates like this ?

I do not use the template, I kept getting errors with it so I just use the source citation given on the memorial page with a [weblink to the memorial] where they list the Find a Grave memorial number in the citation.
