I assume you refer to Y DNA matches an Eaton.
Depending on how many STR's are tested every YDNA test will have many different surname matches, many reasons for this including Non Paternal Events, Sometimes there is a preponderance of surnames clustered around a particular surname.
However as you most assuredly know, if your earliest known ancestor was a slave Lorenze Brodie (male or female), a surname is no indication of paternity amongst slaves.
Nor is a match with an Eaton proof of patrilineal descent, if you tested YDNA, what other surnames did you have a match with, besides Eaton.
How many STR's did you match with this Eaton? How many STR's were tested by you?
