I merged and the person I thought i merged with was correct but it is wrong- and I am not able to release from the connection so i can continue.

This profile appears that it should most likely be opened. I would try emailing wikitree And seeing about getting it opened for collaboration. If this is indeed the father of someone born in the late 1700's
