Hi Connectors (and anyone else interested!),

This month's Connection Combat is a Cartoon Crusher.  It's Charles Schulz vs Shel Silverstein.

Charles Schulz is best known for his Peanuts comic strip with the infamous Charlie Brown and Snoopy.

Shel Silverstein is perhaps best known for his children's cartoons in books like Where the Sidewalk Ends. (Also, random fun fact: The Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue" was written by Shel.)

Charles Schulz

and

Shel Silverstein

Ready, set, go!

The rules and guidelines are here, and post in this thread once you've made a connection so we can declare a winner!

Remember, the goal is to connect one of these individuals to the previous month's winner -  Ben Kingsley.

If you need to be added to a Trusted List, let me know and I will add you.

The winning profile will be featured as one of our Special Connections (like Queen Elizabeth II and Kevin Bacon) so members can have a chance to see how they are connected.

I'm working on Shel Silverstein. Both of these look like they are going to be challenging!

From everything I've read so far it doesn't seem like Shel got married to either of his children's mothers, or to anyone else. Does anyone want to double check for me?
I don't mean this in a bad way...but good!  The last few combats you guys have had them connected almost before I had the post posted!! :D
I'm pretty stuck. Everyone seems to be from Poland, Russia or Hungary.
I saw a few news articles that indicated that he did marry the first mother of his child, but it is clear that he did not marry the second mother of his children. At the same time, I've seen just as many sources that report he did not marry anyone. So I don't know which to believe.

His son was born around 1982-83 - he would be about 24-25 years old now, give or take. It's a long shot, but any chance he married someone who could be traced?

Also, the mothers of his children might be traceable. The first mother was born in Maryland - not sure if one of them might have enough information to follow.
I saw some that said he married the first mother, but if that was the case why would his daughter have her mother's maiden name?

I tried finding information about the first mother but couldn't find her parents (she was born after 1940, so no census). I don't know where to start for the second mother, it said she was the driver of a conch train or something like that? Probably this https://www.conchtourtrain.com/

The son would be 33ish now, but I can't find much on him at all.
Yep - I'd have to agree. Shel is a tough one. I did a bit of hunting and not much on the son. Your age is more accurate. Probably 33-ish is close (some sources show 1982, 1983, and 1984). The first "wife" (if she was a wife) has several potential records for her parents, but it would involve a LOT of speculation to pin down which ones. For parents potentially married circa 1930-1942 and living in Maryland with the last name "Hastings" - best look is for the 1940 Census. It would help to know where in Maryland, but there's pretty limited information on her. Most sources say she was from Sausalito, California. Her SSN Death Index shows her SSN was issued from Maryland, so not a clue there.

I seem to remember the name "Rose" somewhere - maybe on a residence document. This Hastings family out of San Francisco - the mother's name is "Rose"... a possibility?

"United States Census, 1940," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K98N-CKX : accessed 21 March 2017), Dorothy Hastings in household of Alfred Hastings, Assembly District 21, San Francisco, San Francisco City, San Francisco, California, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 38-102, sheet 1A, line 15, family 3, Sixteenth Census of the United States, 1940, NARA digital publication T627. Records of the Bureau of the Census, 1790 - 2007, RG 29. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, roll 302.

Shel's daughter went to live with her aunt & uncle Meg and Curtis Marshall in Baltimore, I'm assuming Meg is Meg Hastings.

So I've found a connection from Curtis Marshall in the obituary above to the tree, but I don't have any information on the wife who is possibly Meg Marshall who was the sister of the mother of Shel's daughter. Samuels-432

The obituary for his son says his wife is "Margaret Taylor Marshall of Baltimore", but Margaret Taylor was the name of his sister so I'm not sure that is accurate.

I made a connection for Shel Silverstein through some Sephardic Jewish families (including Raphael Abendana and Aaron Gomes da Costa) in London in the early 1800s. There's another connection through the Siegenberg family that is just waiting for Beverly Melchior to come back online to make a connection.

Good job Karen!
Jamie, you can see in the obituary that Dr. Curtis Marshall's sister is Margaret Louise (Samuels) Perthou-Taylor and his second wife is Margaret Ann (Taylor) Marshall.
Ah you are right, the wife is in the middle of the obituary. But what are the chances of two Curtis Marshalls having a daughter (or adopted daughter) named Shanna that died in 1982?
Very impressive!!!

I'll give Charles a try - I'll ask to be on his wife and children's trusted list, but if you catch this first, would you please add me?

And I'm guessing that it's only Joyce Halverson who has been added, so in the meantime I can start with Jeannie Clyde (if I can find anything on her).

Thank you!

Hmm - I can't be sure, but if Halverson-176 is his wife, then it's Red privacy, no profile manager, and it appears she remarried a "Doty". I'd adopt, but it's not going to let me. I've submitted an unresponsive profile manager request, since that's probably the correct procedure. Let me know if I've guessed correctly on her profile. Thanks.
Children appear to be yellow privacy - Meredith (Schulz-569), Monte (maybe Schulz-567), Craig (Schulz-571), Amy (Schulz-570), and Jill (Schulz-568). It would make sense for them to be all together.

A little about Jeannie: "Born in England to German parents, Jean Forsyth was raised mostly in California. She had worked as a telephone operator in her younger years, had earned a degree in English literature from Sonoma State, and was a divorcee when she met Schulz."

Scott, I've got you added to those profiles.
Thanks, Jamie! I thought her name was Jean Forsyth Clyde, but it apparently is Jean Forsyth, who married a Mr. Clyde, who was the father of her first child, they divorced when she met Charles, and then she married Charles and became Mrs. Schulz.

And thank you, Eowyn! Now I need to do a bit of digging to get some additional research sources and also to come up with some potential connections.
OK - I have a connection but I'm not terribly excited about it. It's through Joyce Halverson's 3rd husband (Charles was #2) and he is apparently a Mayflower descendant. There appears to be some records discrepancies, but there's also a ton of research out on the "Doty" family so I have a hard time not accepting it. The links should update tonight.
Good job Scott!
