Can you help John Haskell and his children? Collaborative Profile of the Week, Thanksgiving Edition

The Collaborative Profile of the Week - Thanksgiving Edition:
John Haskell Jr. and his Children

John Haskell was a third generation descendant of Mayflower passenger George Soule. So for Thanksgiving, let's clean up his profile and flesh out and create profiles for his children.

  1. John's profile has information on it but is in need of some cleanup (I did some quick cleanup but it needs some more) and inline citations.
  2. Are there duplicates of his profile?
  3. He had 12 children but there are profiles for only four on his profile (Sarah, Mary, John, Squire.) Pick a child or children and look to see if they are already on WikiTree. If not create a profile, sourced of course.
  4. Find sources and write bios for his children.

Directions: Pick something you think you'd like to do. It doesn't have to be on the list. Then post an answer here first. This keeps the question fresh and prevents duplication of efforts. Have fun.

Happy Thanksgiving and Thank you.

I have a minute now I'll add birth dates to his list of children to help searching for them

Anne, here is a very good source for some of the children and their descendants:

"Chronicles of the Haskell Family"  pp. 41-65

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89062865134;view=1up;seq=79

I may not have time to get back to this until Friday - we're getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Cheryl (Aldrich-908) Skordahl

Thank you Cheryl, The source will help. Poke your head in again after your full of turkey, there may still be more to do.
will do, Anne

Cheryl
On the Haskell/Hascall project, we need to change the spelling of the last name. For second child Mary, I can't find a way to change the spelling so I can update her Bio. How do I go about doing that? All info is sourced from Silver books/ Mayflower Families vol 3.
Mary should be Hascall, according to her birth record. Did you think she should be something else?
Don't you think her spelling should match her father??? Consult MF:3:36 and MFP: George Soule 4th ed.:40
To Tom: That's not the Wikitree way. Last name at birth should be what was on the actual birth record. We could change it to Hascol, which is the way it was spelled for most of the children b. in Middleboro.

To Susan: Thank you
I suggest we stay with the last name of each child as recorded at birth.

Then make note in bio about other spellings...siblings, and particularly her father's LNAB.

Cheryl
If you actually check all the records, the name is spelled numerous ways, different with each transcription. I spelled it the way her fathers profile was spelled and consulted the best source available, The Mayflower Society. I'm sorry if I stepped on any toes, but shouldn't the child's last name match the father??
Nope. I think part of the reason the guideline was developed was so that we wouldn't have descendants squabbling over what was the correct spelling. Name spellings have changed over time, so if three people - Hascall, Haskell and Hascoll - all living now insist that their spelling is correct. How would we solve that problem... Simple Wikitree uses what's on the birth record at the time of birth
Hi, I'm new to WikiTree.  Where can I find these guidelines about such things as name spellings. I'd like to get off on the right foot...

In the upper right had corner of most pages, are drop down menus. Under help, choose help index. Sometimes you have to rummage around a little to find what you're looking for. There is a lot of useful information under the Styles and Standards Topic, also in the help pages for Profiles. I'm pretty sure when I started, I read almost every help page. There are lots of other useful items in the drop down menus, that are well worth exploring.

Hi Arlene,  Welcome to WikiTree!  I've been here a bit over a year and I'm really enjoying the site and the connections I've made with other genealogists, most of which know a lot more than me!  Remember, we were all beginners at one time or another.  My advice is just dig in and enjoy!

There is a lot to learn on WikiTree.  Go to the top far right of your profile page, the drop down menu named "Help."  Click on the "Help Index."  This page has several alphabetized pages for you to study.  For naming, click on "name fields" and study the pages under # 2 & 3.

You're doing the right thing by chiming in here at G2G and asking questions.  As you get more knowledge begin answering questions and giving replies.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Cheryl
Yup, I agree with Anne B.  I think I've read most of the items under the "Help Index" also.

Hoping you're having a Happy Thanksgiving too, Anne!

Blessings to you from me!

Cheryl
Thanks Cheryl. Happy Thanksgiving to you and all the others in the thread.
Anne, I can put in a few hours tomorrow (Friday).  Do these Thanksgiving profiles need more work?  If so, point me in the best beneficial direction.  Thanks.

Cheryl
Cheryl, I've been working on the children, I started at with the youngest, and am working my way toward the oldest, If you start at the oldest, we'll meet in the middle eventually.
Anne, I checked on profile for oldest "Abigail."  You've already done extensive work there, so I'm guessing the children are complete.  Good work!

Cheryl
Keep going, there are still some in the middle. I didn't remember working on Abigail. I think the first four may have had previous work done
ok...I'll do what I can with Jonathan Hascol-4

Cheryl
Think I've gone as far as I can with Jonathan Hascon-4.  I could not find an access to source "Mayflower Families vol. 3" so that information is not in biography.

Additionally, Anne, I don't know the meaning of  N.F.R., found in the narrative.

Cheryl
Thanks Cheryl n.f. r - no further record.
Thanks!
Cheryl, I think I've got them finished now. Thanks for your help.
You're welcome, Anne.  I checked over each profile...your work is excellent!

I added category "American Revolution" to sons Jonathan and William's profiles.  I also put in a question to Military & War questioning designation for Jonathan's profile since he was killed in action.  I will add that when I get a response.

Good working with you!

Cheryl
Excellent thought about the Revolution etc.

Thanks, Anne! I'll do a very quick clean-up of the sources section before promoting this on the home page.

Thank you Chris, you should have seen it earlier this morning, I think there were four merged profiles.
Thanks for all you do, Anne.

A great Thanksgiving choice, by the way. It's cool to have a ProW that fits the holiday.

I'm going to look for profiles of the children that aren't attached
by Anne B G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)

Children without links do not already have profiles. Correct spelling of LNAB should be Hascol for JOnathan Hascol, Joseph Hascol, Patience Hascol, Samuel Hascol.

I've proposed merges for duplicate Marys. No dups for others that were already created

There's no way short of the Connecticut Archives to determine correct spelling for last three born in Connecticut - one of these

HASCALL - HASCAL, HASKELL, HASKILL, HASKIEL, HASCELL

Hascall would seem appropriate at least Mary and the first Sarah had that spelling

An internet tree with sources ! thank you Sharon
