By "Heritage" do you mean his family history? If you have a brother, or a direct male descendant of a paternal uncle you can get a YDNA test from Family Tree DNA. You will still need to work on you father's family tree in the traditional way by researching his parents, grandparents, etc.

You can have an autosomal DNA test through Ancestry DNA or Family Tree DNA. No matter which you use you will still need to work on a family tree to make the best use of the matching algorithms.
