Profile Improvement Project (PIP) : What we do and how to join. [closed]

Profile Improvement should be part of every wikitreers routine. From the moment you create your first profile every addition/correction is a profile improvement.

It's a learned process.

The first thing you might learn is how to "clean" up your gedcom import.

Then where to find sources and how to format them (give them enough information that they can be found again even if the links break).

As you begin writing bios, you'll want to learn how to create inline citations.

At some point you'll learn how to merge profiles and how to integrate the two biographies afterwards.

I enjoy solving the puzzles and untangling the knots

If you find that you really enjoy doing any of these, or you discover that you're just automatically improving profiles as you randomly fix the large and small problems on Wikitree profiles, consider joining the Profile Improvement Project. Read the Project Page. Follow the other steps in the "How to Join" section. Then post an answer here requesting the badge. Tell me what you're concentrating on for the moment. Need help with inline citations? I can help.

Thank you.

Hi Anne I see a couple of things listed I can help with I think. I'll add profiles and follow along and jump in when I see something I can help with if you don't mind.   :)
Thanks Gigi, I've given you the Profiles badge. Thank you and if you have questions, please ask.
Thanks Anne B!!
I put this answer under "comment" instead of "answer".

Sorry.

Will try again - - do it the right way - - as I "join" this PIP.

ha ha ha... what a time to make a mistake!

Cheryl
I've given up counting the goofs, I've made. :)
I would like to request the badge. I am currently working on completing pending merges and this involves cleaning up the Biography and Source.

I now also want to improving the quality of my own and the merged profiles.
What a pleasant thing to do first thing in the morning. Thank you Barry.

I'd love to help with this project and i'd like the badge. Here are some examples of my work.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shinn-893

I believe wikitree could be a legacy for people and we can showcase their lives rather than just listing the facts.

Nice work Teresa. Do you know how to create inline citations? See the section "Embed them as references" Here's a really simple example and a slightly more complicated example. If you have any trouble figuring this out I'll be glad to help.

I still have a weakness for inline Citations. I have gotten the hang of using the persons ID and those of his parents and spouse, but the inline sources with just numbers just don't jive with me. I'm a Data Doctor at heart, but the inline in the bio is definitely my weakness. Yes I want to learn as much as I can. Wish I had been in Wikitree 30 years ago so I felt I had more time to put it to use.

I love those inline citations too. I'd happily give you the profiles badge, but low and behold I gave it to you in 2016. Thank you.

Greetings. I request that the profiles badge be added to my profile. I've been cleaning up the ones on my tree, and would be happy to work on others.

Please add the badge for me too.  I already clean GEDs (darn them!), try to source unsourced profiles I run into, give people bios when needed and spent the summer and fall fixing each profile on my own watchlist. Presently I'm helping with the standardization of the categories in the misnamed profiles with Keith McDonald and have always been interested in the Military and War Project. I make profiles for the Vietnam Prisoners of War. Thank you. It's nice that so many WikiTree people are volunteering for this.  Good to see!

Thank you Darlene for your profile improvement efforts, you now have a shiny new badge.

I would like the PIP badge,  please. Recently, I've been working on profiles related to my GEDCOM import, some of the Talbirt/Talbert family, as well as the 5/15/17-6/15/17 Military Challenge profiles. Thank you!

Hi Anne, would love to join this project if I may. I'm passionate about making every profile as good as it could possibly be, love in-line sourcing, and am already doing a lot of this with the Sourcerers Challenge. Thanks! :-)

You may certainly join.  Keep on sourcing!!! and improving. Thank you.
Thanks Anne :-)

As a former professional editor, I can't really help myself - I clean up profiles all the time. May as well make it official!
by Jo Hollingsworth G2G6 Mach 1 (16.8k points)
I know the feeling, you see it and you can't leave it alone. Your official. Thank you for joining and for all the improving.
I may or may not have edited and alphabetized the list when I added myself. :D

Greetings Anne. I'm already participating in the Bio Builders and the Sourcerers projects. It only makes sense to be involved in the Profiles project, too. Please add the PIP badge for me.

Could I please have the Profile Improvement badge? I'm working through my own gedcoms, and trying to get bios written for all of them. Big job.

You may absolutely. It is awarded. Thank you.
Thanks Anne, quick work!

I would like to join this project, please add the badge to my profile.

Much of what I do as a Data Doctor relates to improving profiles. I would love to join this group of people working on building and improving profiles here on WikiTree, including the profiles in my tree as new information is found.
by Janet Wild G2G6 Pilot (336k points)
Have fun improving profiles Janet

May I join, too?  :)  I am constantly trying to improve my own profiles, as well as cleaning up other sections on WikiTree.
by Vicky Majewski G2G6 Mach 9 (92.8k points)
Of course you may join. I was surprised you weren't already.

Excellent idea and I'd love to be part of my project. I've seen so many profiles that are simply GEDcom imports and unsourced. I am currently going through my own watchlist trying to add coherent sourced biographies.
by Living Guthrie G2G6 Mach 8 (88.7k points)
Lots of work to be done all over wikitree, including our own. Welcome to PIP
Thanks for the super-fast response.

Great to be a part of this important project.

I've been improving profiles as part of the bio-builders challenges and sourcerers challenges/sprints as I can't stop at one source, and like to put in as much as I can, including categories and UK project templates and "genealogically defined" where ever possible. I also check newspapers to see if I can find anything interesting to add.

I also try to make sure all the linked relationships are correct and try to source spouses surnames ...so I think I'm pretty much up to speed improving profiles...I just need to be a bit more creative with my bio and background images, but very wary of copyright
by Michelle Wilkes G2G6 Pilot (172k points)
Yes definitely you've been doing the work. You should have the badge. Welcome to PIP
Thanks Anne. It is very addictive, and challenging! I've been getting good feed back from profile managers, so I'm happy I'm making a difference.

Hello,

I would like to request the Profile Improvement badge as this is what I have started to do. I am going through my own profiles to attempt to make sure that they all have a complete and sourced biography rather than simply the bare bones. I am also open to improving other profiles where I have the necessary expertise. I already have the pre-1500 badge, so am able to work on these.
by Living Old G2G6 Pilot (234k points)
Welcome to the Profile Improvement Project. It was a pleasant surprise to take a look at your last contribution and see a biography and inline citations.

May I join please. I have a lot of my profiles that need improving, but, thankfully I added them onto wikitree the hard way rather than using gedcom. I think all my profiles have at least one source, but most of them need more work and biographies adding. I have recently stated joining the Saturday Sourcing Sprints, and using my time on Saturday to work on other peoples unsourced profiles. I also joined this months Biography Builders challenged and have really enjoyed it.
by Joan Whitaker G2G6 Pilot (173k points)
Hi Joan, Improving profiles is what we're all about. Keep up the good work and welcome to the Profile Improvement Project.

Hi Anne,

Please award me the PIP badge for joining the project as well. I clean up profiles as I come across them, and like learning to use the tricks to make profiles more informative and look attractive, especially recognizing our veterans.
by Russ Gunther G2G6 Pilot (105k points)
Thank you Russ. You now have a sporty new badge.
