Is there a reference page for sources, and can it be easier to find?

Hi,  I am new here, so please help.  Is there a page with genealogy book or source information?  I would like a link , perhaps  in the Help menu or at the bottom of the page , to a free genealogy Library.  Personally, I like http://genealogybooklinks.com/, but there must be other sources that could reside as links on a central Library page. Thank you.  Kitty

funny you should ask!  I'm working on a page about Sources... not sure if it will be a project, a category, or just a page, but it would link to pages like Sources (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sources) and Genealogy Help (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Genealogy_Help) and pages members post, like Debby's http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Most_Used_Links ... I'm hoping to work on it tonight (it's 5 pm here & I'm off to a dinner date... maybe tomorrow).

I like the idea of a Library section!  I'll let you know when there's something available for review.

Cheers, Liz

Here's a thread to bring back again.  I'm wading into this territory individually, but I think this should be discussed again with the group and the leadership.

Since she posted this thread, Kitty has created her own libary.  Rick Pierpont has done a ton of work with a Category for Sources and a FreeSpace Page, too.  But it's still no easier to find these resource libraries as far as I can tell.  You really have to have them pointed out to you (as Rick's work was pointed out to me recently by Rob Ton, and from Rick's page I was pointed toward Kitty's.)

I'd like to suggest we start work on a WikiTree Library, that could ultimately be linked from the main dropdown menus.  As I say this, it sounds like a ton of work and not a task that a single user could undertake, but I think in the end it would be worth it.

Maybe someone could add "Improvements" to the tags on this thread.
And if someone knows how to do that on an existing thread, please tell me because I don't know how.

Hello Kitty, have you seen the following pages:

Genealogy Help  found from the "Help" page top right of most screens

One of my favorite sites GoogleBooks Advanced Book Search

http://books.google.com/advanced_book_search

This does not directly your question but one of my favorite pages here is the type of  BOOKS WE OWN page, dubbed  Genealogy Resource Exchange ,among our members : http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Genealogy_Resource_Exchange

I found it by accident one day .

Kitty & Michael - I just changed the free-space page I've been working on to "Open"... please take a look at http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Sources_Resources

I've included the library links y'all mentioned, with a "thanks to" you ... if you'd rather just have the link, feel free to delete your name.

Kitty - does this do what you were thinking of?

Cheers,
Liz

Thanks Liz, this is great.  I would still like to see a link on the bottom toolbar; the one that says "WikiTree ~ About ~ Help ~ Search ~ Surname "  Something like Sources or Resources or Library, so that that information is easy to find on every page in WikiTree.

Thanks for your quick work on this!  Great turn-around!

Kitty
Liz, Can a Library link or your Sources page be added to the drop down Find or Help menu?  I can never find your source page when I want it.  Kitty
I'm not familiar with "Library link" (except to add one to the Sources Resources page, but I don't think that's what you mean) and I don't have any control over what's in the dropdown menus.  I have it as a link from my profile page, if that helps - second bullet under the explanation for the Greeter badge: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Noland-165#Greeter

Any information I add I will be glad to provide sources for if asked>

Hi Jenny, and welcome.  I would encourage you to add sources as you create profiles and to take the time to go back and add sources for the profiles you've already created. The goal of WikiTree is a global family tree with one profile per person. If you don't include your source for information in a profile, current and future Wiki genealogists will have no way to assess the quality of your data.  For instance, you say all of your tree is well-sourced, but I looked at a couple of the profiles you've created and they still show just the default source text. When I'm matching and merging, I would have no way to know that the information is sourced and that I should ask you to provide the source(s).  Cheers, Liz
Liz----will be glad to source past and furure listings.    Will be a week or 2 before I go back and catch up as son and his bride coming this week for 10 day.  will add from now on as I go.  thanks for reply----and glad I asked.

Jenny
Jenny - I'm *still* playing catch up with profiles I created when I first joined. If I had a "do-over," it would be to add the sources as I created each profile! Enjoy your visit :D

Cheers, Liz

I have also been working on a page, but not just sources. It is about citing sources, citations, footnotes, etc. Then I have one for various timelines. Is there a page on Pandemics here at WT?

Do you mind placing the link here or sending it to me?
