More Surname/tags for One Name Studies?

Hi,

Would it be possible to allow more Surname/tags in the One Name Studies?

I have started the Atherton Name Study and need at least 6+ (instead of 2) for the main common spellings since 1175.

Or should I just create a ONS for each spelling and link each to Atherton?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Hi Bob,

It has been brought up before in G2G that it would be helpful for the One Name Studies to have more than 3 tags for surname variations. That is a question for our tech people, but in the mean time, we make do with what tools we have. ;-)

First, go to your list of followed tags and make good use of the space provided next to Atherton in the comment box by listing out all the spelling variations. This information is included for anyone to see that is searching on the Atherton tag.

Second, I would recommend that you create a heading on your Atherton Name Study project page for Spelling Variations and list them all.

I would not recommend that you create a one name study for every spelling variation unless it is now commonly used and there is enough information to be added in its own right, avoiding a lot of duplication.

The best way to display the evolution of name changes within the Atherton Name Study is not as much by the use of tags but by adding the Atherton Name Study category to all individual profiles that would fall under it. Establishing links from the profiles to your project not only advertises your project to other researchers but it will also display all the names on the category page.

I think one ONS with categories and/or freespace pages for each alternate spelling, as long as each alternate can be documented showing it is linked to the common or preferred spelling.
