I have four people that DO connect up, but the connection is complicated. I wish to enter my current census information now, and connect these people later. Is there a way to do this?

There is a way. Go to the following help page:

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Adding_Family

You'll find a link near the top of the page that says, Add an unrelated person here.

The information on the page includes:

If this is a family member it's better to add them as a parent, sibling, spouse, or child from your profile or from someone else in your family tree or Watchlist instead of using this form. That connects them to your tree.

You can also get straight to that page through the menu: Add -> New Person.
Thank you so much for the quick and very helpful answer. I have studied the pages and now know how to add these floating people.

Again, thank you to both Debby Black and Lianne Lavoie.
