March Connectors Challenge: Irish Roots!

Hello Connectors and Irish Roots projects!

We're joining ranks this month to focus on improving profiles for those Irish ancestors, connecting them to the tree, improving profiles, and adding sources.

Here's your challenge: find anyone with an Ireland connection -- lived in Ireland, emigrated from Ireland, family from Ireland -- and get them connected! As always, use solid sources and if you want a hand, post an answer here. This would be a great thread to mention some of your favorite sources for finding Irish records.

I would like to add the template for Irish Roots to my Irish ancestors. Can someone please walk me through applying it? I found the code, but where do I put it?

Thanks,

Kathleen
Hi Kathleen,

You can put it anywhere in the biography section of the profile. It will show up where you place it, so if you put it above the == Biography == it will be at the top of the profile, if you put it after sources, it will show up there, unlike categories.
Thanks very much, Abby. I don't find this at all intuitive - so I just have to ask enough questions to get the gist of it. :-)
Absolutely, Kathleen. Questions and mistakes-they're how we learn! Never be afraid to use them. :-)
Well, just one more comment. Is the information you supplied anywhere in the template instructions? When I first saw "template" I of course tried searching for that on the site. I didn't find a clear definition or how/why to use it - the instructions seemed to skip to more detail.

Cheers,

UPDATED: I'll put my oar in with the following, just cleaned up my GEDCOM upload with 18 connected (to themselves), now connected. Nice Irish names, HIGGINS, SMITH, WELCH, COLLINS, and my favorite SMIDDY. All fertile ground for Irish names.

I've uploaded and de-artifacted a GEDCOM for the "Steam Mill", a nice collection of related by location Irish names. (9 families, 50 names, all the same building, Dedham, Massachusetts, 1855). Help connecting those names would be appreciated!

To get you started, check-out the  Pendergast Genealogical sketch. A target rich environment for Irish names.

Moloney/Maloney is a nice Irish surname. :)
Might want to add Roach/Nugent/Dower to the list as well.

Thank you Abby!!

I think a terrific source that has just landed on the internet are the indexed Irish Catholic Registers that are accessible on Ancestry and Find My Past - free at the moment.

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Irish Genealogy is a good source for records

Dont forget the websites where you can access the Irish Census, for free, I work with this a lot.

Although most of my Irish roots profiles are connected, I'll certainly try to get all of them connected. I wish I didn't have so many with common first AND last names. Sorting them out is a real pain.
