Did you see the new merge changes? Explanations now required.

Hi WikiTreers,

Today we implemented some changes to merging profiles and changing a profile's Last Name at Birth. (Although it's not obvious, changing an LNAB involves doing a merge. In the background, a new profile with a WikiTree ID using the new LNAB is created and the old profile is merged into it.)

The big change is what was discussed in this G2G conversation from a few weeks ago: an explanation for a merge is now required. You have to write a short comment explaining why the new or merged-into LNAB is the correct one.

If the LNAB isn't being changed, i.e. a newer profile is being merged into an older profile with the same last name, there is a default comment -- "clear duplicate" -- so it needn't slow you down unless you want to add more explanation.

A much smaller change: If the merged-into profile has a blank biography the excess horizontal line isn't added.

At the same time, we also made a change that's connected to this other G2G conversation on editing project-protected profiles.

From now on, if you merge into a project-protected profile (PPP) the manager(s) of the merged-away profile will not automatically be added as managers of the PPP. They are still added to the Trusted List.

Onward and upward,

Chris

P.S. I'm hoping to get a few other things released before Christmas, but ... we shall see .... Happy holidays to you and yours!

Nice improvement.  Thanks.
Thanks, Vincent.

You can already see how it's being used in the merge feed: http://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:NetworkFeed&merge=1
