This is to inform the community about the War of 1812 Project. This project is now ready to receive members who are interested in creating or locating profiles of ancestors that served in the War of 1812. The space pages are robust with information and resources to assist new members.

However, if you are a badge collector - I'm sorry this is a sub-project and as such there is no badge. But we have designed a cool looking template for members to adorn their own profiles with....

This project is not just centered on USA - we have members from different continents assisting with the project.  You don't have to be a North American to participate - sometimes it's fun to participate and learn about another country at the same time. We have experts available to assist you in your research into Canadian War of 1812 ancestors and state side USA.  What we currently lack is an expert from England..

Joining our Project means joining a seasoned group of participants - each an integral part to our program and willing to assist. The only requirement is - follow Wiki-tree guidelines and ask for clarification before getting upset over an e-mail. E-mails are so subjective - they can be taken in many different ways.

Even if you are not interested in joining take the time to check out our awesome project - All of our pages and projects are linked together - just click one of the buttons at the top of free pages to take you on a tour of our amazing projects.  Start here:

Thanks Terri!

This project has gone a long way towards educating me about how to find my War of 1812 ancedtors.  I have also learned so much from the space pages about the involvement of other countries. I love how easy it is to navigate through the project and the excellent organization. Everything makes sense and is easy to find.  The Creek Wars project is just fabulous!

This project is really worth checking out!
I agree, Paula. I joined fairly recently and am so impressed by the work the group has done. There's still lots to do, so join us!
This is such a great project. There is so much information and so well put together. It is a great place to proudly present our ancestors that fought for all of us. Much thanks to all that have contributed so much to this project. I am researching some of my ancestors that served and will add them to the project soon.
I would never have known much about the War of 1812 without Wikitree. While researching a great-great-grandfather I found that he was actually named Paschal Hickman Cook (rather than Pascal Cook as we had thought.) Why this name? If seems that Pascal Hickman was a Kentucky war hero from….(Wikitree Trumpet sounds here) The War of 1812.

Go Wikitree, go "War of 1812 Project." Thanks for all you do!

Hi Terri, This is a wonderful project and I love the little template.  it is a gorgeous tribute to our ancestors.

I only regret that it is so difficult to locate.  If the War of 1812 is a sub-project, it seems to me that all military actions should be sub-projects of one Military Global Project.  I would kind of hate to see the 1776 Project as a sub-project of a Military Global Project, but it really makes sense to put all of these military actions, honors and awards under one Military Global Project, at least to me.

I suggest that we create a Military Global Project on the list of Projects and place the following as sub-projects in the main universal project:

1776 Project, War of 1812, U.S. Civil War, The Great War project; and the military and military history categories, as well as any appropriate free space pages that concern military actions, honors and awards.

In short, I am suggesting consolidating all the separate, and largely difficult to locate, military collections in one universal military project with many sub-projects.

The only thing I regret is the suggestion to bury the Roll of Honor Project.  I believe the Roll of Honor Project should be a stand alone Project. This diminishes the sacrifice,  recognition and acknowledgment these men and women deserved.

Hi Terri, I feel the same way about the 1776 project and I am sure the folks with beloved ancestors in other military projects feel the same way, too.  I feel like there should be a project for the families that stayed at home and kept the home-fires lit during each military conflict, for these are unsung heroes, particularly when the conflict was in their own communities.

But in the end, I think it makes sense to put all of these as sub-projects of the new Military and War project.  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Projects#Military_and_War_Project  Thanks to Abby for setting this up.

I have to  agree with Terri the Roll of Honor is different in that it is a project to honour worldwide  Military personnel who sacrificed a lot and I am not diminishing other Military projects by saying that I am the leader of the Anzac Project which I am happy to be a sub project of this new Project but the Roll of Honor is different  It should be a stand alone project
Having it a stand alone project keeps if from getting lost in the multitude of subs this project will start with and I hope it will grow.  The Roll of Honor project honors all veterans from all wars and all countries that meet the criteria. It is and always has been unique. I would hate to see it lose its place. I agree with Terry, any other military project I have, I am happy to see a sub.
