Dear Sir,

I am looking for any information, and details of parents for my 2nd Great Grandmother Miriamm Rowe born about 1788 in Broadoak (BROADOAK, BRADOC) Cornwall.  She married William Rider in Saint George,East Stonehouse,Devon,England 7/2/1810 and relocated to London about 1822.

As yet I haven,t been able to locate a birth or baptism certificate.

Any help or information would be of great help.  Many thanks

Norman Rider

      Hi Betty,

      Thanks for your assistance,

William Rider details are correct as I have them, but the record for Miriam, still doesn't sit right, as Broadoak Cornwall is sufficiently far enough away that the census records that its recorded on must be fairly accurate, also why on those census records would they show William as Stoke Damerel but Miriam as Broadoak, it doesn't make sense.

      Kind Regards

      Hi Betty,

The 1851 census does seem to say Moadeath Cornwall,  My research hasn't brought up any such place but if you look at the 1861 Census it says Broadoak Devon.  This should read Broadoak Cornwall,

My research has given me the following information on Broadoak, which isnt to far from Plymouth where she eventually married William Rider:

Braddock, Cornwall Braddock (Cornish: Brodhek) is a village and (by the name of Broadoak) a civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The village is situated about seven miles west of Liskeard, and five miles south-east of Bodmin. Broadoak parish is rural in character and is well wooded, especially in the north. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 124 increasing to 156 at the 2011 census. The hamlets of West Taphouse andTrewindle are in the parish. The ecclesiastical parishes of Braddock and Boconnoc have been united since 1742. Braddock church is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin: the earliest parts of the building are Norman but an aisle and a tower were added in the 15th century. The font is Norman and there are many good examples of woodcarving in the church: these include the bench ends, part of the rood screen, wagon roofs, an Elizabethan pulpit and two carved panels perhaps of the 18th century. The parish of BRADDOCK (BROADOAK, BRADOC) http://www.cornwall-opc.org/Par_new/a_d/bradock.php Braddock aka Bradoc or Broadoak (Cornish: Brodhek) is a parish in the Hundred of West, situated about 7 miles west of Liskeard, and 5 miles south-east of Bodmin. There is no village centre as such, the parish consisting of isolated farms, the parish church and the hamlets of Middle and West Taphouse. Since 1837 the parish has been part of the civil registration district of Liskeard. Parish Church The ecclesiastical parishes of Braddock and Boconnoc were united in 1742.

This one has stumped me at the moment, I need help from a much more experienced researcher

      Kind regards

      Norman
      The 1851 census says Cornwall, Broad[h]eath ....

The 1861 one does say Devon, Broadoak though

      Hi Norman
I've had a look through this site http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/home/ which although it's all transcriptions is reasonably accurate and seems to have a good coverage of Braddock (Broadoak) but couldn't see a Miriam Rowe anywhere.

I'm just wondering what basis there is for her birth in Braddock or that her surname was Rowe?

I've also removed your email address from the question, and this is an open site and could be seen by anyone and added a few extra tags.

      Hi John,

Thanks for your help with this.  I have had somebody else email me about this and their comments are below:

"I haven’t come up with anything very helpful I’m afraid, just a few comments and suggestions.

There’s no baptism for Miriam Rowe (or any similar name) at Braddock for that period though there was a Miriam Thomas baptised in 1788 to Joseph and Miriam. She’s one of my relatives and I’ve never found a marriage or death for her. Could your Miriam have had a previous marriage to a Rowe or changed her name perhaps? In my Braddock Thomas family the name Miriam, not a particularly common name in Cornwall, appears in at least four successive generations.

There’s a couple, William Rowe & Elizabeth Willcocks who married at St Pinnock in 1785 and baptised their children (assuming they are the same couple) in Tywardreath between 1792 and 1801 (inc. Mary Ann 1801), leaving a significant gap of 7 years.

I think ‘Moadeath’ looks as if it could be ‘Broadeath’ – is it possible this is a corruption of Tywardreath, (pronounced Twardreth), given that Miriam probably couldn’t read or write? There is a Broadheath district in N Devon on the Cornish border but I think that’s a modern name as I can’t find any historical reference to it. The OS Explorer map might tell you if there’s a hamlet or farm with that name there."

I am not quite sure as yet how to move forward with this or is it just a dead end, shame if it is.

There is a Miriam Thomas baptised Braddock 9 Feb 1788.

Is it possible she married a Rowe first?

I'd read the 1851 census as beginning Brad-. so Braddock is probably correct.

Miriamm Rowe married William Rider 7/2/1810 Stonehouse, Devon, England Saint George "England Marriages, 1538–1973 ," database, If I have it right.  Not sure what the possibilities would be that she married before she was 21/22 yeras of age.
I've got people married at 16 at that period and this was rural Cornwall. Perfectly possible, although I can't find a marriage.
