In the 1865 census his John's wife Susan was reported as the mother of 2 children. There was one child, age 12 in the census. The age does not fit for him as the son of John and Susan. In the 1870 census the twins match the Onondaga County history. In the 1900 census, Susan was the mother of 9 children, which matches the history.
Could the unknown infant be another Hale? There were several illnesses in 1863 that took the life of many in the Central New York area.
