This cemetery category has been created:

Category: Valdez Memorial Cemetery, Chugach Census Area, Alaska

The Chugach Census Area (relatively newly formed and formerly part of Valdez-Cordova) is treated as a County by the US Census Bureau. When I went to create this area, I get the following warning: 08:18, 19 September 2023 WikiTree-3 (Talk | contribs | block) deleted "Category:Chugach Census Area, Alaska, Cemeteries" ‎ (BOT Maintainace)

There are five cemeteries located within the Chugach Census Area.

If this category is created again, will a BOT just delete it again? It appears to me we need the category.

I'll look. Sometimes it was deleted but renamed, so it may already exist as a category

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Valdez_Memorial_Cemetery%2C_Valdez%2C_Alaska.

That census area is in the Unorganized Borough, which is how the cemeteries are categorized. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Alaska%2C_Cemeteries

I am not sure why the census areas were categorized as a level. They are not counties and the Unorganized Borough is quite vast, so I get that part, but we don't use "census" places as locations in our categories (or, we are not supposed to). So, why would a census area be a level? Those seem to have been set up by the former leader of the Alaska project, who is a former WikiTree member.

ANYWAY, Chugach is now set up. It also needed a location because it was not created until 2019, which is after the former member was working on Alaska categories.

I think the census areas are used because we do not have counties in that area (that I can see). The US Census Bureau lists the Chugach Census Area as a county (see link)...I'm not suggesting the census bureau has done it right. wink

If you look at the Wikipedia entry (again, not suggesting this is right) it says Valdez is a City in the Chugach Census Area (where we would normally see the name of a county).

YES, I get that. BUT, as I said, we don't generally use Census Bureau locations. I guess Alaska is an exception because..Alaska.

Also, thanks for bringing this up because Alaska's categories needed attention. In 2019 one of the census areas was split into two and replaced. All of that needs to be reworked.
Looking at all of that left me very confused but newly educated (somewhat) on Alaskan civil jurisdiction structure. I need to go back and look at categorization on a profile of a once local doctor who caught the gold bug, went to Alaska, was the only one of 18 who went in that group who stayed when the others thought there was no gold. After the others left he found gold -- and it was all his as the partners had left! He never came back to the lower 48 but did continue to practice medicine and was the only doctor in a vast area.
