Any advice on researching veterans without having to pay subscriptions or request official records?

Most public libraries have free subscriptions to Ancestry and Fold3.  FamilySearch is free (you just have to create an account) and also has access to many records for U.S. veterans.
These resources can also be used at any Family History Center for free.

To some extent it depends on what country and what era and what military branch you're researching.  For more recent U.S. records you might also get some helpful info from the National Archives:

I have some links here to United States Resources (wikitree.com) for the United States. I have put specific links for the National Archives that allow you to find what you are looking for quicker. There are some other links as well.

Jimmy thanks for posting this information. I was recently browsing through the National Archives and found useful Civil War service information. On the other hand, I did take advantage of a Fold 3 free trial and was blown away by the info. I found on my 3rd great grandfather who died a POW at Camp Millen just before its decommissioning due to the impending arrival of Sherman. Those poor soldiers.
