Saturday Sourcing Sprint (6 April 2024)

Hello WikiTreers,

imageJoin in on this week's 24-hour Saturday Sourcing Sprint!

It's basically a casual mini Source-a-Thon.

When it's Saturday where you are, get sourcing!
(And quit when it's Sundaysmiley)

Anytime you want to compete for the Weekly Winners badge, click the "Answer this post" button at the bottom of this post, We use the Challenge Tracker to record the profiles we source.

Tell us about your successes, discrepancies, stories that tug at your heartstrings, and new amazing sources. We use the Discord channel #saturday-sourcing-sprint for text chat in real-time if you'd like to join us. It will be as quiet or busy as we make it.

  • All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories or be already present on WikiTree and only have links to other profiles, links to search results from another genealogy website, or the words "Ancestry tree," "Geni.com," "Pedigree Resource Files" from FamilySearch, and the like. Do not delete these items as they can provide clues for other researchers.
  • If you cannot find any sources, create a Research Notes section, list where you tried to find records, and add a signature to the end of your note using four tildes as a date stamp (you won't see it until you save). Do not remove the Unsourced Template and do not use the tracker or count in your tally. Example:
    • "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry"
  • Sources citations need to provide a way for anyone to find the source. We strive for the Evidence Explained format to tell where, what, who, and when, as well as where the was source was found. Do not delete existing items in the Sources area as they can provide clues for other researchers.
  • If you add a source that names other family members, check to see if their profiles exist.
    • If not, use the Category search box to find and select a category in the format "Location, Needs Profiles Created" to aid in profile creation
    • If so and there are no sources, add the source. Use the tracker to count that profile too

See the Sprint Help Page for full details.

When you save the profile, a green bar for the Challenge Tracker will appear at the top. Due to the security changes for the implementation of GDPR regulations, unlisted profiles are not eligible for challenge tracking.

For all others, click the Challenge Tracker button, add or verify your WikiTreeID, select a pre-defined comment or add your own to indicate which type(s) of source(s) you added, put a checkmark in the "Saturday Sourcing Sprint" box, and click "Add Action." If you participate in the Monthly Sourcerers' Challenge you can click both boxes. For visual learners, this YouTube video starting at about the 4.30-minute mark will explain how to use the tracker (earlier parts of the video explain how to find sources and add citations to profiles).

You can track your progress on the Challenge Tracker reportOnly use the Challenge Tracker if it is between 12 am to 12 midnight on Saturday in your time zone when you are adding sources.

Don't forget to remove the Unsourced template if you are able to add a source!

count me in. Found a Warrant Officer that died in England in 1943
by Alice Thomsen G2G6 Pilot (232k points)
Thank you, Alice! Are you researching Warrant Officers specifically?
Wendy, I am not researching Warrant Officers specifically. I was helping on Meli Alexander, and added a uncle to her CC7. He was a Candian Air Force Warrant Officer, and he and crew died shortly after take off in 1943 in England. Learning a lot today through his profile.
That is what I love about genealogy. You learn so much.
Yes for sure

Please count me me for a few this week I am currently researching those who are buried in Pott Shrigley and am also meant to be making yet another birthday cake and finishing off sewing up a jumper I made some time ago. Husband will be knocking off tiles in the bathroom as he renovates it so will find I have to escape the noise at some point!
by Anon Sharkey G2G6 Pilot (123k points)
Thank you, Chris!  You sound very busy. You are lucky your husband can do the DIY.

You haven't seen the mess he makes in the process !!

And he does not know how to use a brush or a vacuum to clean up withwink

We had been trying since before COVID to get a plumber with  no results lots of waiting in for someone to come to quote so in the end he has been "persuaded" to do it. The bath, shower and shower screen are in ,some tiles are on the wall but  need grouting in  the ceiling has been painted but at tortoise pace it might be ready for the late May Bank Holiday and the number of times he has had to go to a plumbers merchant are beyond belief!!

LOLlaugh We are still waiting for our builder to finish various things. I had wanted it all done before our wedding in September.

My adoptive mother almost had heart failure when they called unexpectedly when I was about to climb through an opening ( which became a bedroom window) with our eldest daughter on my hip at 7 months pregnant  because our builder had decided to go on a holiday with his new "fancy piece" before our stairs were fitted so the only way to the bathroom was up the ladder!
Goodness! You are braver than me!

No needs must! And I had no car that day so could not go to the garage (5 miles) away and buy a small amount of petrol and then use their loo!

Oh the joys of renovating a house when you  have very little money and the list of jobs is never ending. Michael our youngest son recently (this year) put a piece of skirting board on for me in the kitchen I've only waited 42 years for that little job to be done. laugh

Our oldest asked me one day to spell frayed- she was writing a description of her bedroom as well as a drawing. I asked her what she meant and then it dawned on me - we hadn't yet afforded to buy the wood for skirting! And I actually thought it was a good description of the walls!

I always wanted an older property, but we compromised. My youngest, Madi, has bought an older place and there is an endless list of problems they are encountering, damp, roof, etc. Very stressful!
Yes ours was built in the late 1700s and if there  are any problems in old  buildings we've had them

But for all that it's always been a happy home for us. The couple who lived  here previously had no indoor plumbing and managed well into their nineties!

She was actually born here ...sad she ended up in a care home in Crewe as only son was killed in WW2 and Fred died from dementia.
Hadn’t realise you are in the UK. Let me know if you are ever in Warwickshire. We could meet up.

More Sourcing, More Sourcing I say this Saturday.
by Darren Kellett G2G6 Pilot (434k points)

Thank you, Darren! Every Saturday in fact! Let’s make a pact! smiley

Well I went through the Fiji related unsourced profiles and cleared all that I could. Next week will be a different Pacific country or more.

Great idea to focus on different countries each week! smiley

Count me in -- I need to make sure I get my monthly contribution established!
by Joy Beer G2G6 Mach 2 (22.6k points)
Thank you, Joy! Have fun!
This is why I log just a few per month at best.   I just spent HOURS disambiguating a profile at FamilySearch where someone had put all the wrong people together.  To source Helen Moran-914, I had to fix a bunch of stuff at FamilySearch, and then request that they put a living child who was marked as deceased to living.  (No proof of the deceased-ness, the other researcher there just didn't want to bother proving it or adding a live person, I guess.)  I'm done for the day! Sourced ONE and only one.  Alas.  I'm sure people relate. :D
It is worth it to ensure others don’t take incorrect information as gospel.
Amen to this and actually the benefit to me is that I'm getting really good at the source linker over at FamilySearch, creating people, de-duping...  They DID mark that person as living on my request so that is good. They told me I can create a new living person as a bridge for the research -- they can be merged in some future time. It is all to the good, as I'm learning and learning from being a Sourcerer, even a Slow One.
