Look up in Richardson’s Royal Ancestry please [closed]

To anyone with a copy of Douglas Richardson’s Royal Ancestry could I ask if you would kindly look up the John Bulmer that married Theophania Morewick (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bulmer-20) and let me know what Richardson makes of his parents. There seem to be 2 firm 'camps', one that gives his father as John Bulmer and mother Katherine Salvayn whilst other sources give Alan Bulmer as his father and his mother a daughter of Edmond Hastings.

As John notes below the question is not all visible. It reads:

and let me know what Richardson makes of his parents. There seem to be 2 firm 'camps', one that gives his father as John Bulmer and mother Katherine Salvayn whilst other sources give Alan Bulmer as his father and his mother a daughter of Edmond Hastings.

Douglas Richardson has hardly anything to say about John Bulmer, and what he says is in Vol. II of "Royal Ancestry", p. 629. It is pretty well all on the profile. He stated that

  • John de Bulmer, knight (of Wilton in Cleveland and Bulmer, both in Yorkshire, son of John de Bulmer and Katherine) married Tiphaine de Morwick (daughter of Hugh de Morwick and Juliane) before 26 April 1269
  • John died 17 February 1298/9 and was buried at Guisborough Priory
  • his wife died shortly before 28 August 1315

Richardson's sources are

  • Hodgson, "History of Northumberland", vol. 5, 1899, pp. 343-355
  • G E Cokayne, "Complete Peerage". revised edition, vol. 2, 1912, p. 414 (cited in the bio)
  • Farrer, "Early Yorkshire Charters'', Vol. 2, 1915, p. 128 (cited in the bio)
  • Hedley, "Northumberland Families", 1968, pp. 29-31

I have deleted two unreliable sources from the general source list on the profile (FindAGrave and Marlyn Lewis). The source list includes Vol. III of Richardson's "Royal Ancestry", p. 668: all this does is repeat who his wife's parents were.

Hi Rachel (for some reason your question doesn't appear to have come through properly, though when I click on 'edit' I can see it all.)

I don't have access to the Douglas Richardson books, but the genealogical chart in Farrer's Early Yorkshire Charters, vol 2, which is cited on the profile of John Bulmer seems to be correct (and is probably a source Richardson has cited in his books).  The following pages, also cite primary sources for this family.  KSB Keats-Rohan in her short articles about members of the 'de Bulmer' family in the volume Domesday Descendants, agrees with Farrer's chart.

The genealogical chart on p. 105 in Davison's Saxon Survivors, which has Allyn Bulmer as the father of John Bulmer, actually has quite a lot of errors, and the only mention of the early members of the family is this chart, there doesn't appear to be any other discussion that I can see.  It apparently comes from a manuscript, but it looks very much like some of the genealogies found in various Visitations?

Thanks John! I was beginning to suspect that Saxon Survivors contained errors when I was working on Stephen de Bulmer b. 1135 so it’s helpful to know you concur.
