Rosie the Riveter Category Advice Requested

Today, March 21st, is National Rosie the Riveter Day and I was surprised there is not a category on WT for these women.

Rosie, collectively, is also getting a Congressional Gold Medal of Honor next month.

How about a Category for these women?

And one for the many women who gave time and energy to support the troops through the USO.

My Mom did that and she also worked at a train yard doing a traditional job held by a man.  She was in an office, but no less important to the war effort just because she did not get greasy.

I love your mom's story. heart

You are absolutely correct that her efforts were no less important.  What is really great is that the Rosie Association agrees and includes women such as your mom as well.

Great picture of your parents!!!

Fascinating and wonderful - thank you to everyone in this thread!

It inspired me to create a category for the Richmond Shipyards in Richmond, CA, which is now home to the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park, where the Rosie the Riveter memorial honors shipyard workers.

It would have to be for the medal, which covers women who worked in all sorts of industrial occupations during the war effort. Right now, if the workplace is known, that can be added as a category, as could their occupation category. Category:Women in World War II is for military women of the war, so any "Rosie" category would have to be created under a different category parent. I can create [[Category:American Rosie the Riveter Association]] under women's organizations, and it should be for members of the organization.

A category for these ladies would not be appropriate and only if they belonged to the Association (which many did not)?

And, it is not always easy to determine if they actually were accepted as a member so the [[Category:American Rosie the Riveter Association]] would be tricky.

Edit:  I was not asking for a cat for the Congressional Gold Medal for them.  I was only mentioning their importance.

What I'm saying that the Association could have a category, easily. ANd I just searched and found a few names in newspapers.com, but most are living people.

I'm just careful because it would not be a good thing for people to slap on "Rosie the Riveters" and not write about it in the bio or add the company, occupation, etc. Rosie the Riveter is "not" an occupation, but a representative figure of women who went to work in traditionally male occupations during the war. They did great work and should be recognized as big contributors to the war effort, laying the foundation that we, as women, can do any job that we set out to do.

The Notables Project does have a subproject for Rosie the Riveters. You can find it here:

Rosie the Riveter Project

We can work with the Categories Project to get a category created.

Thank you David!  I do have a copyright free image for an occupational sticker already on WT.

Read my answer, above. Some guidelines would need to be established because women who worked only in certain industries would be included. Their companies would need categories, if they are not already in WikiTree. If their specific occupation is known, that category should also be added to the profile. And all of it should be spelled out in the biography, supported by sources, of course. smiley

Would categories for Rosie the Riveter, Doughnut Dollies, USO Performers, etc., fall under Category: Civilians in War

That would make a lot sense.  Thanks for sharing those other categories too.
I would be interested in adding my maternal grandmother to this category. My grandfather died about the time World War II started. My grandmother had to go to work. During the war, she worked graveyard shift at a bomb factory. I will add her story to her profile and place her in this category. Thank you.
The category looks like this [[Category:Rosie the Riveters]]. If you forget, simply click the categories button from the profile edit page and search for "Rosie."

Spent some time enhancing the profile of "Rosie" Jerre Kalbas who just recently passed away at age 105. She was a union organizer and early LGBT advocate. She participated in an oral history project which is available online and is a fascinating read.

I have also added the Rosie the Riveter category to several additional Rosies. We now have several profiles in the category.
