My Oakes came from Ireland and were in western North Carolina by the 1790s.  I do not see a connection to your Oakes family in my records.

Thank you, Roy, for your kind comments. Though I don't see a close family connection between us, I have a location connection. My first cousin 5x removed (James Gartrell) was born in Cornwall, England, immigrated first to the U.S., then to New South Wales. Maybe we have other connections?
