Welcome to the Irish Seanchaithe chat page for the April 2024 Connect-a-Thon, running from Friday, 12 April, at 12:00 UTC through Monday, 15 April, at 12:00 UTC!

(We'll be on summer time in Ireland by then; so an hour later than it looks!)

If you are joining us, you’ll need to register at the Team Irish Seanchaithe comment on the G2G April 2024 Connect-a-Thon thread found here.

Please visit our team page for more information and be sure to check out the Connect-a-Thon tutorial. Scoring for this event is tracked automatically, there is no need to click on a challenge-tracking button. It is fantastic if you are able to make a connection, but even without one, every missing sibling, parent, child, etc. that you can add is worth one point. These profiles cannot be of a living person.

On this G2G page please feel free to start a conversation or ask questions, and to let us know what you will be working on.

Go n-éirí an t-ádh linn!

Hello Irish Seanchaithe Team Members!

The Connect-a-thon kicks off three weeks from today. I hope you're signed up or heading over to this post to sign up now by commenting.

Meanwhile, my question for those who have mastered making a high number of good quality connections during the thons in the past... any strategies you'd like to share that can help everyone on the team??

Thanks!

Karen

Go for it. Welcome to the party. Knock yerself out. What is your plan?

I recently adopted a lot of orphans and have been working on cleaning up the suggestions.  At the beginning of April, insteading of adding new profiles immediately, I started to make a list of all the profiles to go back to and add the family members.  Amazingly enough the list ended up being 5 pages long. I know I won't get through all of them as I am more of a tortoise adding things; however, I have more than enough to keep me busy.  Based on my first Connect-a-Thon, the hard part is remembering to stop to eat and stretch.  Once you get in the zone, it is hard to stop. laugh

General Question - As records can be scarce (especially Irish records), would you use the Census of a child (which lists the places of births for the parents) as a source of birth location for the parent?  Or if you have a better source attached to the parent like their death certificate, would you not attach it as it is an indirect source?

I would use it rather than have nothing there and you can indicate where it is from. Are you talking about the Irish census? As I think I’ve seen on American one’s they seem to list Ireland as a birth location, not usually any greater detail. Obviously the census is only as good as the person filling it in.

If an Irish death reg, they only ever state where they died unless in the workhouse when they might give their last address.
Thank you, L.  That was my thinking.  If nothing else, use it.  If something better, don't bother adding it; however, I just wanted to check.

Do any of our Team have a paid subscription to Findmypast? And if Yes, is the 1921 England Wales and Scotland Census still behind a Paywall?
by Patrick Holland G2G6 Mach 5 (55.4k points)
Hi Patrick. I have FMP with 1921. 1921 is an additional subscription on the basic as is or was 1939.
Thank you David. Interesting. I don't have a paid subscription. I access through a free Library membership onsite or offsite. And recently it is giving me free access to both the 1921 Census and 1939 Register.
Ok. So I guess you don't need my help then. Good connecting!
