If you have taken a DNA test, what does the testing company report for your ethnicity? Is it what you expected?

Please tell us about it with an answer below, or answer on Facebook, or use the question image to share your answer with friends and family on any social media.

P.S. Don't forget to select which test you have taken so it can be connected to your ancestors' and cousins' profiles.

Ancestry (I NEVER use Ancestry to mark ethnicity):

  • 47% Scotland
  • 34% England & Northwestern Europe
  • 10% Wales
  •   6% Sweden & Denmark
  •   3% Norway

Family Tree:

  • 59% England, Wales, Scotland
  • 36% Ireland
  • <2% Scandinavian
  • <2% Sardinia
  • <1% Malta
  • <2% Finland

My Heritage - 1st test via another test site:

  • 48.1% Irish, Scottish, Welsh
  • 43.9% English
  •   2.0% Greek & South Italian
  •   4.4% Balkan

My Heritage - 2nd test via My Heritage:

  • 47% Irish, Scottish, Welsh
  • 44.9% English
  •   4.2% Greek & South Italian
  •   3.9% Balkan
  •   1.6% West Asian

23andMe:

  • 97.1% Northwestern Europe
  • 97.0% British & Irish
  •   0.7% Spanish & Portugese
  •   0.8% Northern West Asian
    • Iranian, Caucasian & Mesopotanian
  •   0.2% Arab, Egyptian & Levantine
  •   0.7% Congolese & Southern East African
    • Angolan & Congolese
  •   0.1% Broadly East Asian

23andMe and My Heritage actually comes much closer to what Dr. McDonald noted in my DNA several years ago, He said I had 6% Caucasian, a presence in the Germany/Poland region (I don't remember the %) and a very real 0.7% African. I also don't remember the exact % for England/Ireland.

One other note: Gedmatch notes I show 3.5% Jewish ancestry. My Jewish ancestry is distant.

My paternal grandmother's mtDNA lineage is Ashkenazi Jewish with the likely Sephardic connections. My dad's YDNA shows ancestry from Spain, Portugal, Poland, Ukraine, Netherland, Germany, Sweden, England, US. He may have one or two Jewish people in his male line. I have no idea how to understand one or two Jewish individuals.

My maternal grandmother's mtDNA shows connections from Germany, US and Scotland. My maternal grandfather's YDNA shows connections to the Eastern Europe, Balkans, West Asian, England.

I've come to accept that I'll likely not ever be able to trace and connect many of these ancestral people due to brick walls and NPEs, adoptions.

Your DNA connects you to 4 communities.

Communities form when we identify AncestryDNA members whose ancestors probably came from the same place or cultural group.

Southern Backcountry to Oklahoma & Texas Settlers 1700—1975
Connected to your regions: England & Northwestern Europe; Scotland

Greenville & Laurens Counties, South Carolina Settlers

Tennessee Settlers 1700—1975
Connected to your regions: England & Northwestern Europe; Scotland
Southwest Nashville to Lewis & Humphreys County Settlers

Alabama Settlers
1775—1975
Connected to your regions: England & Northwestern Europe; Scotland

Central Southeast & Northern Alabama Settlers
Colbert, Lawrence & Morgan County Settlers

Southern Midwestern Settlers
1700—1975
Connected to your regions: England & Northwestern Europe; Scotland

Nothing unexpected there except that it keeps shifting over the years from mostly English to Scottish as their data has gotten more precise.  The communities are spot on.

97.1% Ashkenazi Jewish
2.9% Irish, Scottish, and Welsh
Tested with My Heritage DNA

Ashkenazi Jewish is not a surprise. I am 3rd generation British, with all 4 of my grandparents born here. However, I understand that all 8 great-grandparents were immigrants, from the regions indicated by the regions indicated by the Ashkenazi Jewish groups.

So, no idea where the 2.9% Irish, Scottish, and Welsh comes from.

It is bizarre to see this question after having another company use the same DNA sample analyzed several years ago by Ancestry to create an estimate for free during the recent promotional period on My Heritage. That said between those 2, GEDmatch, Genomelink, Ftdna, they are ALL vastly different but especially the most recent:

* GenomeLink: NW Europe 60%, Other European 27%, EastEurope 11%, Asian 3%

* My Heritage: Scandinavian 43.4%, Greek&South Italian 25.5%, Irish/Scottish/Wales 24.9%, Balkan 4.4%, Finnish 1.8%

* Ancestry: England&NW Europe 29%, Ireland 21%, Sweden &Den 17%, Eastern Europe &Russia 17%, Scotland 13%, Wales 3%

* CRIGenetics: (100% European for recent analysis)- German 37.8%, Italy 18%, Southern, Central Slavic 13.9 %,  British Isle 11.9%, France 10.5%, Spain 5.4%, Scandinavian 2.5%

* I'll stop there bc there are more  but it's interesting to note ALL results except the last one- were derived from the same data derived from a single sample sent to Ancestry several years ago. That has evolved w/technology and users info but the rest were extrapolated from that same compressed data file sent to the other sites for free basic analysis or for studies etc at some point. If anyone needs or wants the links or code I can verify and send.
