I tested on Ancestry.

Ancestry estimates are:-

England and NW Europe  65%                            (Communities Devon and Cornwall).                                                                   Scotland  16%                                                                  Wales 7%                                                                        Ireland.  7%                                                                         And Sweden and Denmark.   5%

I uploaded my results to MyHeritage, their estimates are:-North and West Europe.   54.2%                                       Irish, Scottish and Welsh.   45.8%

I agree with Ancestry as my Paternal Great Grandfather was Cornish and came to Australia, so I know I have that heritage. And on my father’s mother’s side there is Scottish.

The Sweden and Denmark comes on my mother’s side somewhere in the dim-distant past. She has strong Kentish links.

I have also uploaded to GEDMatch.

Using GEDmatch Eurogenes/Oracle, Single Population Sharing, Population Source and Distance, the results are:-

1. Southwest England    3.61                                                   2. Southeast England     4.55.                                                 3. Orcadian                     5.33                                                 4. Irish                             5.51                                                 5. West Scottish              5.75                                                 6. South Dutch                6.02                                                 7. North Dutch                 7.09                                                 8. West German              7.58                                                 9. Danish                         7.75                                               10. North German           8.37                                               11. Norwegian                 9.3                                                 12. French                      10.03                                             13. Swedish                    11.35                                             14. Austrian                     14.13                                             15. East German              14.92                                           16. Spanish Cataluna       16.46                                             17. North Swedish             17.06                                           18. Southwest French        17.13                                           19. Spanish Castilla Y Leon   17.64                                     20. Spanish Cantabria        17.64

So all in all an interesting mix? I am wondering if the Spanish part is where the dark brown eyes and darker skin came from? My very ‘English’ grandfather had darker skin and the palms of his hands were light, the story was always told it was through ‘pirate’ blood in the past. I have never been able to find anything like that?

Not going to compete with extensive details given but :

MyH was near enough to known ancestry (based on an upload from LDNA test BUT said I had Ashkenazi (low %) - must have been from growing up in NW London... but Ancestry said Paternal (correct, no junk details) and Maternal (correct, but some interesting but possible trace of Nordic ).  Ancestry found/confirmed 3 close cousins, MyH still can't match a brother and sister - same test company, same test type, time.  Ah well, ......."and statistics".

From 23andMe:

  • 49.7% Finnish
  • 33.8% British and Irish
  • 16.0% French and German
  • 0.5% Broadly Northwestern European
This matches my research.  My mother--who was born in the USA--spoke only Finnish until she was six years old.  Her father was an immigrant and her mother first-generation.    My father's family consists primarily of early settlers from New England and Quebec that lead back to England or France.
The one outlier to the above pattern I've found is a British officer from South Carolina who--after the Revolutionary War--resettled in Nova Scotia.  Not a nice man, from all my research thus far, but fascinating branch to learn about.  And even that 'outlier' leads back to England.
