This grandfather is listed as mulatto/black and white. The name is so common, so common that there are two more generations of Henry Smith

This is your grandfather? What records are you looking for, like census, death record, etc? (well, I think Alabama death records may have been spotty then, but they may be recorded, see places to look here.)

Hello Dorothy,

The 1880 Census has him 12 years old. He was the foster child of Richard and Isabella Bryant in Montgomery, Alabama. He had two foster brothers, Albert and Jeff Lumpkin, aged 10 and 8 respectively. All three boys were attending school. Henry was listed as mulatto, while Richard, Isabella, Albert and Jeff were listed as black. At that time, Richard was 49 and Isabella was 43.
