Tree Apps Update: Ahnentafel Ancestor List

If you've ever taken a look at the Ahnentafel Ancestor List Tree App or if you're interested in that kind of thing, please take (another) look as it's changed a lot recently.

Changes:

  • Only ancestors who are in the database are listed.
  • 10 generations load by default (as opposed to 7 before) and more can be called up by putting a number in a box and clicking the 'X more generation(s)' button.
  • A 'Tidy' checkbox tidies up the text a little.
  • Generations are collapsible/expandable.
  • Links to parents in the text will take you to the parent's text on the page.
  • Clicking a button to the right of each person's text will show only that person's line to the root person and the person's ancestors.
  • Some numbers have been added to show the percentage of ancestors in each generation that have profiles and the number of people who are repeated due to pedigree collapse.
  • As you click various collapse and focus buttons, the history of the page is recorded, so you can step back by using the two little arrow buttons that appear at the top.

I hope some people find it useful.

(I've just noticed a small problem with it, which I will fix soon, but if you don't notice that, don't worry about it. smiley)

I get an error code when I try to open the list:

Error: TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'Id')

Oh! That's not good. Please send me more details (preferably by email).
Love this!  Very easy to read and understand. Easy to print. I can easily take it with me to meetings.  Way to go. Thanks!
This is FABULOUS!  Now how do I add information to it?
I am unable to access this. I get a message that says:

”Sorry this profile is private and you are not on the trusted list.”

Since this is my profile, I should be able to access it, right?

Kat Colman
Kat: No, that doesn't sound right... Are you looking at the regular one on the Tree Apps page or my test page that I've linked to on this page?  If you're looking at my test page, you need to log in to the apps server.  If you're looking at the regular Tree Apps page... I don't know, but I'll try to find out.
I tried to see it two ways - one using the link given in the latest Wikitree news email (with my profile in the link) and a second way by clicking on the tree apps tab on my own profile page. I would have expected that second one to have worked, since I was logged on and on my own profile.
Yes, me too... I'll try to find out what's wrong.  I assume you were logged into WikiTree at the time?
Yes, logged into Wikitree at the time. Thanks for your help!
Kat: This is fixed on my test page.  I guess the Tree Apps version will be updated pretty soon.

Ian, I get an answer that says "the profile is private and you are not on the list "....???  Thank you in advance for any advice you might offer toward solving the issue.
Updates have gone through on the main Tree Apps page, so this should be OK for you now.
Thanks so much, everything is working fine now!

I am of the view that Ahnentafel pedigrees are one of the best methods of displaying genealogy lineages. As far as readability and precision without filler; Ahnentafels are the way to go.

cool

Can we (I) have a "Super Tidy" button?

It would convert this format:

  • Born in Jennings, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, United States on 10 Oct 1919. Died in Jennings, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, United States on 11 Jan 2014.
to this format:
  • b. 10 Oct 1919 - Jennings, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, United States
  • d. 11 Jan 2014 - Jennings, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, United States

I'll look into it.
Updates have gone through on the main Tree Apps page with the new 'Format' button that cycles through 4 formats.

----------

Are you referring to the DNA percentages?

  • Parents: 50%
  • Grandparents:  25%
  • Great Grandparents:  12.5%
  • 2x Great Grandparents:  6.25%
  • 3x Great Grandparents:  3.125%
  • 4x Great Grandparents:  1.5625%
  • 5x Great Grandparents:  0.78125%
  • 6x Great Grandparents:  0.390625%
  • 7x Great Grandparents:  0.1953125%
by Tommy Buch G2G Astronaut (1.9m points)
No.  I didn't put DNA percentages in it.
The percentages are the fraction of possible ancestors at that level that you have in your wikitree.

As my full Ahnentafel is on Family Tree Maker, I'll check who's missing (as I have focussed only on one family line with a brick wall).   The low percentages show where there is work to be done in fleshing out those lines.

Thanks, Ian.   Very interesting.

There will always be the one who likes the old way better.  This time it is me.

I agree this is far easier to manage and probably much more useful to most.

I used the old way with blanks and who that number was for help in DNA research, finding the generations and numbering of the missing useful.  The numbering of the people not in the database and and referencing back to the number of the generations that are there.

I am finding it hard to explain.

Not a real big issue at present as I did print the list for easy access, however is there a way I can print things the old way with the all the numbers and references back?  If not not a huge issue, just asking.

The effort of volunteers to continually update and improve is very much appreciated, with a hint of jealousy, I wish I could do that too.  (once was a programmer - now I get lost trying)

I am thinking with an ancestor chart (names only), a surname table (or list), a surname/name index and this listing, I have something I can print and pass on to someone.
NG, if you send me an email or something, I'll see what I can do for you.

Tip:  I looked into printing out the pages and the entries do not split in the middle of one's name and data (at least for my setup:  computer and printer).  Also, I looked into possibly printing more than one page on a page and my software driver allowed me to select up to 16 pages per page.  I haven't printed it out yet to see if I can read it, but I was able to get 15 generations on a single sheet front and back with half of the backside still available for more pages.

I have a major problem with my ahnentafel tree app.  Why are the names shortened?  As shown on the ahnentafel, the person's name does not match the name as shown in the proper first name, or in the preferred name, or in the name displays as selected for the person.

Since my grandmother, Anna Margretha Elsabea (Rohde) Steffen now shows as Anna (Rohde) Steffen, this makes the ahnentafel useless, as it does not correctly identify her.

Therefore, no one that I could show this ahnentafel to would be able to match the person shown this way with the person as shown on any other tree.

Please correct this to show the name as shown on the profile.

by Willodene Adams G2G6 Mach 8 (89.9k points)
Hi Willodene, I'm sorry if this has rendered the app 'useless' for you.  I'll expand the names.  Sorry about that.
I think I've fixed this (waiting for it to be added to the site).  Here's my test page: https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/beacall6/tree_apps4/#name=Steffen-1085&view=ahnentafel .
Yay!!  Now it's showing the names just as they should be. And many Thanks, Ian.  It's so great to have you helping us on WikiTree.
Updates have gone through on the main Tree Apps page and this should be good for you now.

This is an amazing way to see your ancestor list!!!!  It will help me to verify my family tree and hopefully find a few more in the future!!  THANK YOU!!!

Awesome!  Showing those that are repeated is something that I have wanted for some time.
My mother in law at generation  at  generation 10:
444/512 (86.72%) 202 (267) duplicates!
Thanks for your work.

That could be very useful! One small question, but why are some names pink & others blue? Is that some form of nagging because it doesn't appear to be gender-based?
by Doreen Saunders G2G1 (1.4k points)
Oh! Please show me where it doesn't seem to be gender-based.  There is a fix waiting for private profiles that show no gender (they should currently show as green).  With an Ahnentafel, we actually know everybody's sex (I'm not going to talk about gender... ), so I've fixed that.  Also, if you see any that say 'undefined', I've fixed that, too (they will mostly say 'Private' now/soon).

One of my grandfathers shows pink, but another shows blue... or am I being thick?

I think I've fixed this already, but I'm waiting for it to be added to the site.  Here's my test page: https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/beacall6/tree_apps4/#name=Baylis-909&view=ahnentafel .
Doreen, please check out the app on the main Tree Apps page and let me know if you still see this problem.  Thanks.
No change, I'm afraid. I still have most of the names in Pink, but about 20% in Blue. Actually, as I scroll down, there are more blue than pink.

I am just referring to the key ancestors names after the number on the left, not to their family members in the narrative.

This is new to me! It's wonderous! TYVM, Ian!

Can you explain to me how to use the information, i. e., 77/128 (60.16%) and what to do with 2 (4) duplicates, please?
by Cathy Brandstetter G2G6 (9.7k points)
Hi Cathy.  Glad you like it.  There was an Ahnentafel list there before.  I just changed it a little.

I have no idea how you would use the information.  It's just information.  77/128 just means that 77 of your 128 5th great grandparents have a WikiTree profile.

For the duplicates bit, please click the '?' in the app and read the help text.
Is there anyway for the report to somehow identify the duplicate ones?
If you look closely, it says "(also #123)" by the name
Search for 'Also' found it.  Thanks

Linda: They look like this:

269.Johanna "Hannah" (Arnold) Donovan (Also 273):Born 22 Dec 1732 in Baltimore, Maryland. Died about 1773 in Baltimore, Maryland. Mother of (134) Philip Donovan. Daughter of (538) William Arnold and (539) Elizabeth Gilbert.

See the 'Also 273' next to the name.

Edit: Sorry, I hadn't seen you'd found it.

Ian, this is wonderful.  I've never seen one of these lists, so it's amazing to me!

Thank you.!

Glad you like it. smiley

Please take a look at some of the other Tree Apps.  There may be more that you've missed.

Great tool. I really like. Very good idea to have put a number on each line and to reference it when duplicating ancestors. With this tool I can quickly see where my ancestors came from.

I discovered a small bug with compound first names like "John Paul" which does not take '-' here in New France and the system only retains the first name which is John.

It's good to have put the ancestor names in hyperlinks. Is it simple to further improve the tool to be able to display the navigation dialog box popup when we remain the cursor on an ancestor as is the case everywhere in Wikitree profiles?

Congratulations to the developers of this tool and for the Wikitree software which is the best I know.

by Daniel Chassé G2G Crew (610 points)
Thank you, Daniel.  I'm glad you like it.

I think the name problem has been sorted out in my test version.  The Tree Apps one will be updated soon.

I'm looking into adding the profile previews.  I'm not sure if it can be done right now.
