Help us build links back to WikiTree! Link Builders Challenge (Mar 2024) [closed]

Question

Hi, WikiTreers!

WikiTree has pledged to stay 100% free forever. This means we have to keep costs ultra-low, and can't spend money on advertising. Link building is a way to spread the word about WikiTree and bring in new members. It's also great "cousin bait." 

We do link building, for example, by adding the WikiTree profile id for an ancestor to Wikidata or by adding a profile url to an IMDb page.

Answer this post to let us know you'd like to participate. 

1. Pick an ancestor to focus on
2. Add a link back to WikiTree to external websites (these are just a few ideas):
   1. Wikidata
   2. FindAGrave
   3. FamilySearch
   4. Industry sites:
      1. IMDb
      2. Discogs
   5. Fandom sites:
      1. Wookieepedia
      2. Tardis Wiki
3. Edit the ancestor profile, add a link to Wikidata/Wikipedia if it doesn't already exist, for example. (use template: {{Wikidata|Q123|enwiki}} this will link to Wikidata and the Wikipedia article.
   1. Use the challenge tracker! Aleš so kindly added an option for us to add multiple words to the comment section after you select "Link Builders"!

I have been adding the WikiTree Citation to various FamilySearch profiles.

Haven't been served with a Cease and Desist yet.

Notables has updated their instructions to include updating Wikidata with the WikiTree ID, and putting the Wikidata template into the profile. We're in the process of reviewing the living profiles at the moment, so we'll see some improvements there on numbers of Wikidata profiles showing a WikiTree ID. So I suppose we're participating as a project team - sort of.

I just saw this. I wish I had more time to help. I can at least request the wiki name be updated to Wookieepedia, which has always had two e's.

That being said, put me down tentatively for the Cubicle meeting on Tuesday March 26. I should at least be able to attend that.

I can put links on FindAGrave and FamilySearch. I already put links to both those pages on WikiTree profiles. Now that I know how to reciprocate, I’ll do it both ways as part of my ongoing standard procedures. I guess that means that I am joining the ranks of LinkBuilding Ambassadors?

How do I find and use the challenge tracker for linking to outside sources? I am not changing the WikiTree profile of the person when I just added a flower to FindAGrave profile …
