On 29 Feb 2024 Ann Browning wrote on Stillwell-18:

Nicholas is the son of William Stillwell and Jane Curtis, not Nicholas Stillwell and Alice Holmes. This is proved by the will of Thomas Curtis of Puttenham  of 1610 and Jane Stillwell’s will of 1610, she also of Puttenham. The marriage of William Stillwell and Jane Curtis  is recorded in the Puttenham register.

I cannot find a marriage of a Nicholas Stillwell to Alice Holmes at all so I’m not sure where this info has come from. What is the source for his origin being Puttenham? Did he make a deposition?

I propose that the parents currently attached to Nicholas Stillwell be detached as no reliable source can be found for the attached parents.

The birth of Nicholas is also recorded in the Puttenham register, on 1 February 1605. All the other purported siblings were baptised in Dorking.

Numerous elements of this man's biography and genealogy (not just his parents, but also his wife, immigration and residence history, and also possibly details of his children) appear to be in dispute. The New Netherland Project has protected this profile because of the various disputes, but that does not mean that the project has any special expertise to help resolve the disputes.

To aid in understanding these disputes and also help in resolving them, it would be helpful if the various profile managers and other interested descendants would edit the profile to:

  • (where possible) identify reliable sources for those "facts" that are not currently supported by reliable evidence,
  • describe/discuss disputed items that are not currently identified in the profile as being in dispute, and
  • include citations to and discussions of sources such as the will of Thomas Curtis of Puttenham  of 1610 and Jane Stillwell’s will of 1610 that Ann mentions in her comment.

It might work best to add some or all of this content to a "Research Notes" section of the profile.

The project protection of the profile restricts the connection/disconnection of family members, but it does not restrict edits to the profile.

As does this one which has many errors in it such as Mabel Stilwell being the mother of the regicide John Cooke
