What is a state called between 1776 and the time the state is formed?

Such as, South Carolina was called the Province of South Carolina before 1776, but it didn’t become a state until 1788.  So what was it called in between those dates for people who were born or died during 1776 and 1788 in South Carolina?

I perused the March 1776 constitution of South Carolina and it refers to itself as a colony. For example, in paragraph XV, it says:

XV. That the delegates of this colony in the Continental Congress be chosen by the general assembly and legislative council jointly by ballot in the general assembly.
