Data Doctor Challenge of the Week: Correct simple errors in reference tags

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge of the week?

This is an easy one to participate in, once you know how reference tags work, i.e.:

  1. A footnote needs to start with <ref> and end with </ref>.
  2. There needs to be a <references /> tag directly below the == Sources == headline for the footnotes to display.

Using these tags is confusing for "Newts." It's very frustrating for new members when a tag is missing or misplaced and they can't figure out why footnotes aren't appearing.

Once again, Aleš has come up with something incredibly helpful. He's prepared a report of profiles from around the tree where a reference tag appears to be misplaced.

Can you help fix them?

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. It's nice to cheer each other on. Or post if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

I've been correcting reference tags in the profiles that I've made. I've learned how not to make mistakes with the <ref> tag but there are still some that haven't been fixed.

I'm happy to do this. I am still not quite sure how reference tags are supposed to be done. I understand the beginning and end of the reference (I think) but what the heck is a footnote and how does that figure in?  My questions aren't being answered, they're showing up as answers. Can anyone help?
An easy way to check the code that is used is to find a profile you like and go to edit for that profile. Then you can see how they have done the things you like. The ref tag is used in the biography section, open with ref and close with /ref. Then the reference will be added underneath Source section. I hope this helps you. If it dosen't give me a private message and I try to help you better! ❤
Footnotes?  well, we don't use the word in WikiTree.  But you will often see profiles copied from other systems which have a footnote section, often in WT heading format.  So, part of your task as a ref-fixer will be to decide how to convert them to a standard WT format.  First split them into separate notes, and work out whether they are really (a) citations, so code them as refs, or (b) notes about the research done, problems, decisions etc. - put these under a separate ==Research Notes== heading just before ==Sources==

I'm working on my grandfather's Biography. I used the C button to add the tags, but how does this link to the pertinent sources? I've already added a bunch of sources. I would really appreciate some direction here; definitely not a computer geek. Thanks!

I think you are missing some basic knowledge.  I recommend you have a good read of the WikiTree Help on reference tags.

I am also writing a step-by-step beginners' guide to ref and span tags, which I can send you if you message me directly.  It's still unfinished, but the early sections may help you.
I would much appreciate your beginners' guide.

On a slightly different note, the reference to footnotes was taken from a wiki document about references. I had never seen it used before, so was curious.

Thanks!
