My husband's family proudly claims to be related to " cousin" John Muir, but I cannot find the connection; any ideas?

Tim Ellis' maternal grandmother is Gertrude Muir.  ( Muir-1166) Her family came from Scotland to Wisconsin, as did John Muir's family. I've searched for years for a connection to verify the family's claim that he is a "cousin" with absolutely no luck. A lot of Moores and Muirs in Scotland; are they all related?

Add a tag for Scotland as you did for Muir to get more attention.

My way of trying to connect to a certain ancestor is to start by building out all the families named Muir - children, aunts and uncles, cousins in the time period that is easy to access. The more width in the lower branches of the tree the better the chance of finding the higher branches.

It might also help to chat with PMs of John Muirʻs profile and his descendants. Look at Johnʻs descendant list for anyone in Wisconsin.

I am sure others will have other ideas.  Donʻt give up.

Thank you so much for your reply. Can you tell me how to add a tag. I don't know how I got the " Muir" tag on there, and I can't figure out how to add other tags.

Hi Patty. Go to your question on its G2G web page and click the small link edit just under the question. On the resulting page, scroll down till you see a box labelled "Surnames/Tags". Enter the tag you want in that box, in this case

scotland

(as well as muir which is already there), then click the Save Changes button.

Hi Patti, as far as the connection finder goes, you would need to do more connecting to prove that.  It shows 16* between your husband's father and John Muir.
