Hi Wikitreers,
The historic Belle Grove plantation and its history is very fascinating and the sale of the property to Benjamin Barnes Cooley during the Civil War era is where I pick up the story however does this person need PPP?
1.) Is there a name list of the slaves who were part of Belle Grove plantation history? In particular I’d like to find more resources about Lucy Walker and Harriet Robinson
*see https://www.bellegrove.org/images/uploads/Updates_to_2021_Features.pdf
*see https://www.bellegrove.org/about/enslaved
*History of the plantation https://www.handleyregional.org/services/departments/archives/manuscripts/b/890-THL
2.) The actions of Rebecca Cooley Gordon have been noted in other works who sympathized and helped the slaves. I’d enjoy learning more about this woman in the Belle Grove household
3.) Is there a free space of Belle Grove plantation any in depth study?
Thank you
Note: YouTube is a great video about the Belle Grove Plantation.
…”tells the Tale of Two Women at Belle Grove during the Battle of Cedar Creek, which incorporates the oral history of Lucy Walker, research on Rebecca Gorden, accounts of the Battle of Cedar Creek, and information about Middletown residents. Ms. Mills tells this story in the room where the women were on October 19, 1864.”
Thank you, Andrew, for bringing this plantation and the resources to our attention. I will create the space page for Belle Grove Plantation, as it will become part of the Plantation Index managed by the US Black Heritage Project.
I will be updating Isaac Hite's profile, as well. I'll post the completed space page here. Thanks again.
More research is needed, but here is the Belle Grove Plantation.
