The Petty Surname Y-DNA Project has identified Y-DNA connections to Hubert Petty (Petty-7, arrived in colonial Maryland about 1652) for over two dozen Project participants, not only confirming that relationship, but also establishing which of Hubert's six grandsons (the sons of Hubert's only son, Thomas) they descend from, and forming over a dozen individual, genetically distinguished branches. Whether you have a well-documented paper trail for your ancestors or are just finding out about your Petty family, the results from a "Big Y" test will unequivocally confirm whether you are a descendant of Hubert - or not. If you belong to one of the already-identified branches of Hubert's tree, your Big Y results will also determine your placement within that branch. If your results show that you belong to a new branch (one that's not yet represented by a Big Y tester), more testers will need to be recruited to help with the further definition of that branch. All descendants of Hubert Petty, whether well documented or merely suspected, are encouraged to take a Big Y test and join the Petty Surname Project.
