One Name Studies - study manager and etiquette

Hi! I have two questions related to One Name Studies:

1. A One Name Study that I contribute to is currently without a project manager. I'm toying with the idea of volunteering (not very seriously, yet). What tasks are involved in managing an existing ONS? What type of time commitment is required? Would being sporadically available preclude me (while traveling, for instance)? Any advice or best practices would be appreciated.

2. The ONS that I participate in is one of my chief areas of genealogical interest. I get daily emails from WikiTree whenever there's an update to someone with that surname. It's a relatively common surname. There are updates to this surname most days. Would it be a breach of etiquette to add those profiles that I come across this way, or any others, to the ONS, even if I haven't done any other work on the profile? Are people likely to be offended if I do this?

Hi Darlene. On your second question, adding a sticker, including for a one-name study, to a profile where one is not a contributor is contrary to the guidelines at

However, there is no rule against adding the category for the one-name study.

Hi Darlene,

I lead the Doby Name Study.  It's very loosely coordinated between genealogists in several branches of the U.S. Dobys and several countries around the world for Doby branches that are not connected.

I mostly just collect the information that is going on in other areas of research and try to keep that up to date on the name study page.

When I get emails about profiles with that last name I contact the profile manager to let them know I'd like to add a few categories.  I've only had 1 person say no, so far, but I did it anyway, because they profiles were from the 1700s.  I also use a category for "review" so I don't lose track of a profile that may need attention, but I don't have time to work on right now.
