On 2 Feb 2024 Bobbie (Madison) Hall wrote on Winslow-146:

The ''Mayflower Families Through 5 Generations - Chilton'' (1997), Vol. 15, p. 18 tells us that the children of Joseph Winslow and his wife Sarah (Lawrence) Salters had four children:

Mary and Joseph Winslow, born in Boston in 1674 and 1677; and two unnamed children who were mentioned in their grandfather's will in March 1673/4, but of whom there was no further record.

What evidence is there that they had a son Thomas Winslow born 4 April 1679 and is said to have removed to North Carolina? Can further proof be found to link Thomas to these suggested parents, or should they be disconnected? There is also mention on Thomas' profile of DNA evidence, but is it valid at 8-10 generations from a living person?

I have disconnected Joseph Winslow as father of Thomas Winslow of North Carolina as Thomas' actual father is documented and a skeletal profile was found and attached.
Well done, T! Thank you for all your work on this family group. Hopefully, a family member will take up this line and continue with it.

Thomas Winslow's marriage record is found in the Supplement (p 6) to Vol I of Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy. In my second edition  hardbound copy of Hinshaw the supplement is actually bound with Vol I. It reads, "1704, 9, 2. Thomas, s Timothy, Perquimans; m Elizabeth Clare." Unless there is some error in the transcription resulting in a mis-identification of his father, then his father is Timothy Winslow, not Joseph Winslow of the Great Migration.

Hinshaw notes that the supplement comes from 80 manuscript pages of Perquimans MM records found in a second-hand bookshop near Glens Falls, New York. This was found after 1936 (first publication) and before 1948 (second edition) so this information was not known to Ellen Goode Winslow whose book which touches on the topic of Thomas' father was published in 1931.

Edit: Bobbie, I first wrote here that we could safely detach however I want to see if I can find an image of the original manuscript to make sure there isn't mis-identification of his father since the father of his wife is a Timothy.

Here's a share link to original marriage record: https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/9647412?mark=7b22746f6b656e223a224d732b4445485a7756354942526f6b364f2b794567634a70502b2b7764384b6b516273524f655236484c6f3d222c22746f6b656e5f76657273696f6e223a225632227d

The father of Thomas is Timothy and it appears to read he is of Perquimans. Laid as the place of marriage (currently seen on profile, I will change) appears to be a mis-read of the text which means they had placed their intention of marriage before the Meeting.

Excellent work, T! The marriage record certainly gives his father's name as Timothy, not Joseph. I'll leave this alone  until you have a chance to locate and possibly attach Timothy.

Thank you for digging into this and getting it corrected.
I agree with Bobbie Hall, T Stanton. Excellent work.

It turns out Thomas had an ill-sourced duplicate in WT which is now merged. And, a profile representing his documented father Timothy Winslow exists with a wife attached (but with no documentation of the maiden name). There is some undocumented information seen about Timothy some of which is likely in error but some of the other information may prove useful if documentation can be found.

In Ellen Goode Winslow's History of Perquimans County the possibility of Thomas Winslow being the offspring of Joseph is discussed on p 438 ending with "in the absence of proof we will leave that unsettled question to future generations for solving." Winslow is the most thorough of early works on this area and its earliest settlers and generally without error unless later documents were found that showed something to be wrongly interpreted.

I'll look at this a bit further on Sunday on behalf of Quakers Project (and he also shows currently as a quite distant cousin). I've placed a few mentions from Winslow on the profile of Thomas Winslow. This is available digitally

I'm not a DNA person but the comment on the profile appears to read that the person who wrote it is rather uncertain of the interpretation.
