Sports Notables Super Bowl Legends Challenge - February 2024

Super Bowl LVIII will be played at Allegiant Stadium on Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday February 11, 2024. In celebration, this month we honor 30 Hall of Fame Super Bowl legends. Won't you help us make each of their profiles a shining star of WikiTree! Some are already pretty close, others not so much.

We need the help of BioBuilders, Sourcerers, DataDoctors, Categorizers, Formatters, Proofreaders, PhotoFinders, and more. For those who prefer research over profile building, we also want to increase each of our notables' CC7s, and of course we want to make sure each is connected to the Big Tree.

Remember, no contribution is too small, so jump in wherever you think you'll have the most fun. Just remember to keep us posted on your accomplishment on this G2G thread so that we can all share in your successes.

Terrific job this month everyone. So far we've connected ten Super Bowl legends to the Big Tree. We still have twelve who remain unconnected:

Willie Davis (connected)

Buck Buchanan

Willie Brown

John Mackey

Winston Hill

Bob Hayes

Rayfield Wright

Curley Culp

Franco Harris (connected)

Fred Dean

Walter Payton (connected)

Reggie White (connected)

Let's see how many we can connect in this final week of the month.

Super Bowl legend Golden Richards has died at the age of 73. He played for many years with the Dallas Cowboys and was with the team in 1977 as they defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII. He later also played for the Chicago Bears. he is not connected to the Global Tree.

Golden Richards is connected.

I did some work on Reggie White's family. Was able to identify a set of great-great grandparents. Added about two-dozen relatives. If anyone wants to pick up where I left off, there are lots of potential leads here.

I will try to help with research on the non connected. I research through Ancestry.

Thanks Rosemary. Anything you can contribute will help. And remember, connecting is important, but attaching family, adding sources and writing bios all count towards enhancing the profiles and improving the greater WikiTree as a whole.

Walter Payton will show as connected tomorrow.

It was a long connection path with many turns. The key was when I asked a question about Garsie Williams aka "Robert Ross" here on G2G [[Williams-136953]]. Garsie Williams was convicted of murder and escaped from the Mississippi State Penitentiary to Arizona. His second wife was of Apache descent. Through her family, who were of the White Mountain Tribe of the Fort Apache Reservation, I was able to find a connection for Walter Payton.

Great job Margaret. Walter Payton was a hero of mine growing up. We lost him way too early.

Franco Harris will show as connected tomorrow.

The connection was through his uncle, Clifton Harris.

I had no luck with his mother's family; she was born too recently for Italian records to be available. Nor did I find a marriage record for her and Franco's father Cad Harris. Don't know if they were married in the US (military base?) or in Italy.

Great job Margaret.

For those that are unaware, we add a new challenge every month, but we do not shut down the old ones. If you'd like to take a stab at any of our past challenges, you can find the entire list here: Notables Sports Project (scroll to the bottom of the page).

Willie Davis will show as connected tomorrow.

I found two paths. Both go through the Traylor family of South Carolina and Bienville Parish, Louisiana.

Congratulations Magaret. You are a Super Bowl Champ!

I worked some on Reggie White and I think I may have found a connection through one of your profiles, David: Napoleon Bonaparte Marsie Stinson [[Stinson-3996]], if he is the same person as "Pole" Stinson, was the father of James Gibson Brasher [[Brasher-1043]] by Nancy Brasher.  Nancy Brasher had children by, it appears, three different fathers before she married Martin Wallace in 1902 in Shelby County, Alabama.
