Being on another site and excepting hints as correct then later, finding out that I had for incorrect suggestions back many more generations, meaning I had to abandon and start again because it was so bad

Been there done that. An ancestor of mine that was mentioned by family members, accepted as total truth on family sites, etc. and one I remember my father speaking of when telling me where my last name came from - well, when I finally "looked" at the sources and history, I found his wife would have had to have been 64/65 before having the first of 4/5 children. So, there went a very large portion of my family tree. It still happens, but not like that and not erasing so much. I didn't think I'd ever clean up that branch of my Adams side.
