I have a handwritten award my ancestor was awarded in 1818 for scholarship, in Lowville, NY.  It is signed by his teacher, E. W. Ellsworth.  I would like to post it on their profile, as it's a neat little piece of ephemera.  At first I thought it might be Phelps-10562 (Eunice (Phelps) Ellsworth (1789-1815), but she died in 1815.  It's too early to be her daughter, Elizabeth.  I can't find another likely candidate, male or female.  Ideas?

I would look for town records to see if anyone got paid.  I found this in a history of Lowville

The first log school house was built in Lowville along Mill Creek in 1803, although home schooling had begun several years before that. The first public provision for schools in the town was made in 1813, and a two-room stone school house was built on State St., just south of today’s Methodist Church. But the biggest boost to Lowville was the early decision by Lowville’s founding citizens to charter the private school, Lowville Academy, in 1808. That school would go on to attract students from all over the North Country who were desirous of an education. And Lowville Academy, though now public, continues to excel to this day.”

Thank you for the suggestion!

Try the Village Historian: https://historicallylewis.org/research-resources/local-historians/ .  My wife has worked on local school records for Duanesburg, NY for the town historical society.  Early 19th century records are hard to come by.
