Why are merged profiles still listed separately in categories?

Question

Category: Ireland contains an appeal to "Please do not add individual profiles", yet appears to contain 12 individual profiles, including two James Webbs, who in turn appear to be duplicates.

Further research revealed that Webb-610 was merged into Webb-601 back on 15 December.

Why do both duplicates still appear in the category almost a month later?

Because James Webb's profile still contains [[Category:Ireland]] at the top (in Edit mode).

Just remove that line.

That explains why the remaining existing profile is in the category. For the likely reason why the merged-away profile is still separately visible as well, see Paul's answer. Maybe it's better not to remove the line yet, so that this example of the bug is preserved for investigation.

There was a bug that appeared after the site update in December where profiles were not removed from categories when they should be (see https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1674067/site-maintenance-last-week?show=1676833#c1676833). Maybe the fact that merged-away profiles are still listed in the category is another symptom of that same bug?

Yes, there have been other instances of profiles which have subsequently been merged away remaining in their categories.

Right, it is part of that bug. With non-merged away profiles, once they are edited again they will disappear off the lists, but we are going to have to create and run a script to clean up the merged-away profiles and ones that haven't been edited.

Following Jillaine's advice, I have changed the category for Webb-601 to [[Category:County Down, Emigrants]], which removed Webb-601 from the original category page, but left Webb-610 there. I will wait for Jamie's script to hopefully work the necessary magic in due course.

I hope that someone with a better understanding of Irish categories than mine will know where to put the other 10 misplaced profiles currently in the top-level category.
