Hi just doing some genealogy on a Sylvester Babineau who appears to be the child of a John Babineau and Mary Leblanc.

Do we have any idea to who his parents may be? I'm assuming the John and Mary may be anglicized from Jean and Marie.

Cheers

according to one of the members of a French-Canadian Ancestry  FB group John and Mary LeBlanc are the parents of Sylvester (the senior) :  the death certificate of Sylvester (the father) can be found at the provincial archives.  archives.gnb.ca (of course you need to add the www://  and Sylvester (the son) is in two census reports on Family Search, if that helps any.  I would have pasted the links but WT would not let me 'paste'.

According to his page on Familysearch, Sylvester, son of John Babineau and Mary LeBlanc was born 10 Jan 1856 in Bouctouche, and died 8 Sep 1921, in Saint John, NB

A possible marriage record for him indicates that he is from Richibouctou. No Sylvestre/Sylvester/Sylvain in the Registre des paroisses acadiennes for Richibouctou and Richibouctou-Village born to these parents.
I agree this is probably their marriage record. So he could have been born with the name Sylvain and later used Sylvestre.

In the 1881 census, there is a 57 year old widower living with them transcribed as "Jim Louis Bavineau", but looking at the image I think it looks like John Louis Babineau. Sylvestre named one of his children John Louis as well. I think this might be Sylvestre's father. He might be the same person as Babineau-1405, Jean Louis Babineau born 1821 in Richibouctou, the son of Sylvain and Marie Richard.

There is a baptism record for a Marguerite Babineau born in 1850 in Richibouctou with parents Jean Louis Babineau and Marie LeBlanc, which matches the parents' names in Sylvestre's death record. There is also a Jean Louis Babineau who married a Christine LeBlanc a couple of years earlier, this is probably the same couple. However, I can't seem to find any more records for this couple. Not sure whether her name is really Marie or Christine. I added some possible sources to the research notes on Babineau-1405, he could be the Jno. L. Babineau who died in 1896 in Saint John.
