Sources Sources and Sources

I am finding it a tad frustrating looking at a few surnames that could relate.

And finding just one reference to an  'unreliable source' as explained at [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Reliable_Sources], even more frustrating when they are created THIS YEAR 2024.

I know many like myself at first, did not understand the way WikiTree does things is a little different to normal.

I just think there should be more reminders of how to use WikiTree. I know there is a link [https://youtu.be/eqUlQ0dxsgk] on the landing page, but what about G2G?

Maybe a weekly question that would show this link and a rehash of answers to the most common questions or a link to FAQ on the landing page as well as G2G.

As far as going to the help pages, I find them extremely cumbersome to get around, and I am not 'New' to WikiTree any more.   (quite a few others have expressed their exasperation at the help pages).

Anyone would think I did not like WikiTree - I LOVE IT!

I suppose I am expressing my frustration.

I hear you, but have a different perspective.

My wish, would be that Wikitree get rid of that term. Because it leads to so much confusion. It only applies to pre-1700 profiles (which I still disagree with), but should not be applied in any other situation.

I'm a half glass full type of person, to have any information is better than no information, because I can evaluate the information at hand to determine whether to accept it or do more research.

I have often posted that all a source serves is to tell you where the information came from so you can evaluate the accuracy yourself. Per Wikitree Sources (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources)

A good source citation enables others to:

judge the accuracy of the information found on the profile, and

independently verify the information by finding the source themselves.

A complete source citation includes:

who made the record,

what the record is,

when the record was made, and

where the record is/was found.

With this as a community we can expand and improve. Even if someone gets it wrong or does not provide a source. At least you have a clue to start with and expand the research.

At any event that is the strength, because whatever is written can be improved upon instead of being locked and unchangeable.

I agree that I have found some very useful leads by investigating online trees.

It was suggested to me that to add online tree links under the heading:

* See Also:

You never know how an Online tree may help, only yesterday I found a photo of a Wedding Certificate attached to an onilne tree at Ancestry that led me to where they were born.  This information was not in any online record.

As you said, It would be nice to know more and not just 'online sources'.

I also have a gripe with Gedcompare but I wont go there again.

Anyway, we have to make things easy for the newcomer and have enough information to be able to check the sources for ourself.

May be impossible but we can dream!
