Norwegian translation

Question

Could someone look at the following page on the DigitalArkivet and tell me what is written in far right column, left page under "remarks."  Bracketed 6 lines....

"Druknet i Leppa? Elv ved Tømmerbrøtning, og igjenfunden i Ona? Elv den 13 Juli."

He drowned in the Leppa? river while clearing a logjam, and was refound in the Ona? river on 13 July. I'm not familiar with the river names, and it's not made better by the cutting of the page.

Log driving was dangerous work, and many of my relatives perished in the same way.

What a sad story but thank you for translating it.

My grandfather's lines were from Trondelag and were fisherman - some drowned doing that too.  This is my grandmother's side from Oppland and were loggers.  My great-grand, the immigrant to America, was eventually killed in a sawmill accident in Wisconsin.  These people were adventurous and hearty souls but they sure did live in and endure dangerous times.

Leppa is indeed a river in Nordre Land. It runs into the Etna river [map link]. So the second river name that is partially obscured by the edge of the page must be Etna.

Tomle farm is located on the hillside above the river junction.

Thank you for those namings and the map.  "One day" (famous last words - ha!) I'm going to go to Norway, rent a car and drive to all my "family farms" in Trondelag and Oppland while touring the countryside!!!

As I've been doing some research in Land, Oppland, I came across your Lars Olsen on FamilySearch at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/G38R-B6N

I also checked the probate index cards for Tomle farm but none found for Lars there around 1826.

Thanks Mandy....I've looked at that site before and it looks like a couple of people have worked on it since.  Whoever did, seems to have access to Boka Om Land which I only copied several farms while at the SLCity Library.  I'll look again and compare the sources on the DigitalArkivet.

I've decided Lars is going to be "my project" for the upcoming ConnectAThon in a couple of weeks.

Thank you so much for pointing this out.  That's a volume I can use!!   I did know the Viknaboka was online but the others I needed a while back weren't....so now I will always check back. I guess it has something to do with copyrights here in the US.  If I were a bit more techie.....I might spring for a VPN and "pretend" I was in Norway with a dot-no address.....not that techie though.   Robyn
