The Canada Project is hard at work improving profiles for our Canadian ancestors, and developing teams around exciting topics including:

  • exploring the local histories of specific places, through the families that lived there
  • writing the biographies of notable Canadians, and finding their connections to the broader tree
  • making sure the lives, familial connections, and history of First Nations Peoples are well documented and central in our one-world tree

We would love you to join us! The Project covers all things Canadian, so no matter what your interests are, there's a team waiting for you!

To start with the Canada team, you'll begin with a journey down our new Trans-Canada Trail (you can learn more about it here). The trail is a short introduction to writing biographies and citing sources, and a bit of Canadian history. While you're learning, you'll also be helping to clean up, source and connect our shared tree! On the Trail, you'll also meet new people on our teams and learn to work within an active, collaborative WikiTree community.

Once you've completed the Trans-Canada Trail, you'll be invited to join other teams within the project that interest you.

Membership Information

If you are new to WikiTree and have not become a full member you will need to upgrade to Wiki Genealogist Level. Sign our Honor Code to receive your Wiki Genealogist badge, which is a necessity for editing profiles. Full details can also be found on the Canada Project home page. This will also give you a time line of what to expect from the Trans Canada Trail.

To start your journey, post an ANSWER below!

The project does not appear to have an important group - - - United Empire Loyalists
by Wayne Anderson G2G Crew (840 points)
Hi Wayne,

There is a sub-project for that. More here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:United_Empire_Loyalist_Team

Let me know if you are interested in joining the Canada project and working on this team.
Hiya,  I am happy to help with the UEL sub group!
Hope I'm not jumping ahead here, I'd also like to join this sub-group, as I'm primarily researching various projects for U.E.L ancestors.

Thanks!
Fantastic! It is always great to have new people on a team!

Hello - I have recently discovered a branch of my family is from St. François du Lac, near Montréal.  Please add me to the Canada Project and the Québec team.  I am also struggling to remember my high school French classes from the late '80s; so if there are resources for common genealogy phrases in French, that would be helpful as well.  Thank you.  Joe
by Joe Christensen G2G3 (3.4k points)

I am sure we can find some help on that front, Joe. I have sent you a private message.

Here's the Quebecois project page:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Quebecois

It doesn't look like we have a list of common terms and phrases.

You could contact Danielle, the project coordinator and ask about that.
Thank you, Peggy; that's very helpful.  I think that project page has enough to keep me busy for a while.  I will wander through there before seeing if I have additional questions.

I would love to join. I have done extensive work on my mother's side of her family that has many relatives that are early French settlers in Quebec City and Montreal regions. I have just not had time to update this information into WikiTree!

HI

Please join me up. I know that some of my cousins here at Wikitree, are UEL descendants though THEY may not yet know it. In 2023 I certified 2 of my ancestral lines (Westover and Hostetter) as Niagara Peninsula UELs, and I see many, many Wiki cousins from those lines in here.

Those names, and Corbetts, Nobles, McManus', Hammonds, Valleries, Moores, Ewings, Sommervilles, Farleys, Mayes', Burnisons, and of course IRELAND's, all of whom began their Canadian journey in Ontario before spreading westward...are among my interests.

I would be happy to join the Canada project.  My focus has been primarily on 19th Irish and Scottish settlers in Cape Breton, and I have done a lot of work following their descendants as well.  I am also interested in settlers in Eastern Ontario in the late 18th and 19th Century, including United Empire Loyalists.  However, I am willing to work on other projects, such as building profiles of notable Canadians.

Hi Peggy

I may have time to participate this year. It will help me to standardize/improve my documentation skills.

My family is primarily based in southern Ontario with some arriving pre 1800. There is at least one proven UEL connection.

Sign me up.

I would also like to join. My focus is on French Canadians mostly in Ontario, Québec, Nova Scotia & upstate New York. Beyond my own family, I research Upper Canada's immigrants, UEL, Scottish, War of 1812, pioneers of Bytown,  immigrants from the Carribeans and Latin America. Thanks!
