Best practice for extended biographies

I am creating extended biographies for my closest relatives and some of the most notable ancestors. They average a thousand words, in some cases more. There are photos and newspaper articles about them i would like to include.  Would they best incorporated into the primary biography, memories or in a free space page linked to the profile?

I would recommend either the profile or a free space page. Using a free space page is generally a good idea for items that apply to multiple profiles.

See the profile improvement project for links to example profiles and steps toward improved profiles. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Profile_Improvement

That many words? Definitely a freespace page.  If you put it on the profile itself, you may well get a Suggestion that it is too long.  A fairly standard length for a profile is 300-500 words, so you can see 1,000 would far exceed that.

Sorry Ros, I disagree. Suggestion 801 "Big profile" does not kick in until the biography text contains 100,000 characters. That's a great deal more than 1,000 words. Even then it's just a warning, not an error.

Many excellent long profiles exist, way over 1,000 words. See this example and an earlier discussion about it.
