Let's celebrate our ancestors who have a special link to the month of Janaury!  Please answer this post with some words about your ancestor and what you'd like the WikiTree community to know about them.  Don't forget to include their WikiTree ID number so that folks can visit their profile.  Photos are welcome too, though not required.

We'll celebrate your ancestor with a shout out on the Saturday Roundup Livecast; we love stories, so please share whatever you can to bring them to life.

If you need inspiration for which of your ancestors to tell us about, go to your Watchlist and then click on the Anniversaries tab.  It will give you a list of all the significant dates in January for anyone in your watchlist.

Betsy, you've reminded me I need to complete my grandmother Johnson's bio. Yikes!

Maxine was born on the 1st of January 1901; how neat is that. In her youth she was trained to ride Tennessee Walker's at her grandfather's farm in that state but one day her brother brought home a dashing young man who he'd met while working out west and twenty-six year old Maxine was hooked. So, in 1926 she left Tennessee for Arizona where she lived the remainder of her long life. She had substituted Tennessee Walkers for quarter-horses but she never swapped my grandfather for anyone else.
Hi Leigh Anne--Thanks for sharing your grandparents' sweet and romantic story and belated Happy Birthday to Maxine!  We'll show her profile on the January 13th livecast.  Here's the link:

I hope you can join us either live or any time afterwards!

Cheers,

Betsy

January 1 is shared as birthday by my 9GGF Rupert and my first (and so far only) grandchild. Happy birthdays!!!

I only discovered Rupert in 2022 as I had made it my personal genealogical goal for that year to extend our family tree to the 20th generation of our then still expected first grandchild. I succeeded to make the connection to my 16GGF Hans, thus spanning twenty generations when our grandchild was born. Interestingly enough, Hans’s profile has been on WikiTree since 2012 (!).

Not an ancestor, but I would appreciate a mention for my sister Elisabeth who was taken from us too young and who would have celebrated her 61st birthday this January.

How sad that you lost Elisabeth.  I just read her profile and it sounds like she was very accomplished and committed to giving back to her community.

We'll share Elisabeth's profile on the January 13th livecast.  Here's the link:

Happy New Year Betsy!

My Aunt Jeannette Lamontagne-481 was born on 1 January 1904. She married my Uncle Walter, oldest of ten children. My mother, the youngest, was the flower girl at their wedding. I need to find that photo!

To honor Jeannette, I connected her to her Québecois ancestors. During my research, I found untouched 2011 profiles created by Mary Tweedie. While wanting to share my enthusiasm, I discovered that Mary has passed away, very sad. So I honor her also. We have so much work to do here.

I truly wish everyone a happy and healthy 2024!!!! ✌

I always associate January with my first cousin Britta Dedrick. She passed away from cancer in 2019 and I miss her terribly. Writing her biography is one of the hardest things I have ever done.

by Susie MacLeod G2G6 Pilot (303k points)

Dear Susie,

I'm very sorry that you lost Britta.  As many of us know, cousins can be like siblings to us.  We'll celebrate Bitta and show her profile on the January 13th livecast (10 am EST/3 pm UTC).  Here's the link:

Cheers,

Betsy

Thanks, Betsy. Sorry I wasn't able to be there for the live but I've caught up since and am very grateful to you for including Britta's profile and helping to celebrate her life. She would have been tickled pink. :-)

My Father Vernon Nash was born January 29, 1942

Displaying early initiative, to join the work force left high school prematurely in Grade 11 and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy as a cook, dedicating two years to service on various ships. After a brief hiatus (4 months) from the military, he reenlisted in the Air Force.

A January memory was his return from serving as a UN peacekeeper in Egypt following the Yom Kippur war.

He continued his distinguished military career in 1992 after 32 years of dedicated service, achieving the rank of MWO. Swiftly transitioning to civilian life, he secured a position with Land Force Atlantic, where he oversaw Food Services Members and Deployments. However, governmental cutbacks led to his retirement after about a year. Subsequently, he found employment at the hospital at CFB Halifax (Stadacona). .

A man of varied interests, Vernon embraced physical activities such as badminton, tennis, and running, starting during his posting to Greenwood in the mid-80s and continuing into retirement. Despite the onset of ALS, which physically restricted him, for the last few years of his life he maintained mental sharpness and his sense of humor.

He died 8 Years ago, 2 days before is 74th Birthday on January 27, 2016

Hi Brian,

Thank you for introducing me to your father through your post and his profile.  It sounds like he was a wonderful man and you were lucky to have him as a father.  We'll celebrate him on today's livecast.  I'll hope you'll be there as usual.  I see that the photo you posted in G2G didn't come through.  Perhaps you can unlock his profile for a few minutes during the livecast so that I can show a bigger version of the photo.

Thanks,

Betsy

My 2x great grandfather, William Sadler Fears, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fears-53 was born on 31 January 1807 in Greene County, Georgia. He his brothers and some uncles moved to Henry County, Georgia when he was about 20 years old. He lived to be 95, had two wives and eleven children including an orphan they adopted. He was a farmer, land owner and a minister. He has quite a legacy.

Incidentally, my youngest daughter shares his birthday - only 172 years later.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kirkpatrick-5924 Dwight Kirkpatrick:

The only time we would see each other was when I went to Kansas for family reunions. As younger children we had fun playing together. As we aged, and married we talked about our days in the two states, Oregon and Kansas, and about the family.

Unfortunately the reunions ceased after our Granma West passed away.  Since then Dwight has passed away as well. But thank you for the memories.

Hi Alice,

First cousins can be very dear.  I have special memories of visits with my own cousins when we all were children.  I'm glad you had a chance this week to think back on Dwight.heart

Grandfather Joshua Haskell Schuffman, born 4 Jan 1900, trained dogs and was a dog show judge in all the big dog shows.

by Robert Hvitfeldt G2G6 Pilot (256k points)
Hi Bob,

I really enjoyed reading your grandfather's rich biography.  Including the postcard of the Miami hotel where they lived for a while was a fun touch.  And the YouTube link to more photos is wonderful!

One of my cousins shows her pugs at shows around the Midwest so I know a tiny bit about that world.  It sounds like your grandfather was famous in dog circles.

Thanks for sharing him with us.

Betsy
Thanks Betsy,

He was quite a character.  Smoked big cigars and drove a big Cadillac.  Got pulled over in Chicago once—they thought he was Al Capone!
